Most moms will agree—your skin definitely changes after you have kids. Whether you see more dark spots, or have just seen your first fine lines appear, if you’re like me— you’re all about learning about skincare methods and beauty products to rejuvenate your skin no matter how many little ones you have running around.
In this post I’m telling my fellow mamas and skincare fanatics 6 skincare myths that will surprise you. Plus, I’ve included some resolutions to help you combat old folklore with some modern skincare techniques.
1. Junk Food Causes Acne
So far, there hasn’t been substantial evidence to support that junk foods cause acne. Now this certainly doesn’t mean you should hop in the car and pick up a bag of fries for you and the kids. But next time you hear this myth, you may want to take it with a “grain of salt.”
2. Aging Causes Wrinkles
While aging may bring some wisdom and experience, it doesn’t technically bring wrinkles. It’s really about a lack of peptides. If you’re asking yourself, “What are peptides?”, you’re not alone. Peptides are basically the pieces that make up protein (like collagen) in your skin. Collagen is one of the main elements that keeps our skin looking young and beautiful.
Using preventative measures like putting on sunscreen, staying hydrated, and moisturizing can help protect your skin and encourage the production of peptides.
3. You Can Shrink Your Pores
There’s a lot of buzz around this one. While you can clear your pores, we’re here to clear the myth that you can actually shrink them. Maintaining a good skincare routine can help flush out the oil buildup in your pores, but unfortunately the size of your pores is actually genetic.
Many beauty companies claim to adjust pore size, but in reality, they’re actually just covering the appearance of them. Many women have found products that effectively cover up their pores, so test a few and let me know what works for you!
4. Facial Exercises Tighten Skin
This one is a tale as old as time— and ladies have been practicing this little skincare myth for ages, but aren’t likely getting the results they’d like to see. While your facial muscles may feel tighter as you make a scrunchy face or raise your brows, there’s not much evidence that supports this exercise when it comes to actually tightening your skin.
However, with a skin myth, there’s always a new solution! Jade facial rollers have become increasingly popular among men and women. Many have noted that these luxurious beauty accessories have promoted elasticity in their skin— plus they happen to feel amazing.
5. Stress Doesn’t Affect My Skin
Stress can be exhausting to your physical health, relationships, and even for your skin. Studies have been conducted during final exam periods— finding that students had experienced acne flare ups in the time surrounding their exams. Taking measures to reduce your stress can help in many areas of your life, even your skin!
6. “I Don’t Need to Protect My Skin from the Sun”
Protecting your skin from the sun is one of the most important things you can to do prevent sun damage and more serious skin conditions like cancer. If you’ve ever fed into this skincare myth, I urge you to think again before heading out without a healthy layer of sunscreen.
Keep your skin beautiful for years to come when you take strong preventative measures.
What’s better than a high SPF sunscreen? Doubling up on skin protection with an SPF sun hat to give you an extra layer between you and skin damage. Make sure both you and the kids are outfitted with proper sun protection, especially during those warm summer months when you’re spending most of your time outside.
