Just because you’re a stay-at-home Mom doesn’t mean that you can’t be a working mom. And by “work,” we mean more than cleaning the house and making your kids’ lunch! There are plenty of great careers that you can lead—part-time or full time—from the comfort of your own home.
Here are five great jobs that any Mom can do at home. It doesn’t matter if you’re ending a sabbatical or if you’re just trying to find a job where you don’t have to sit in the office all day. These five jobs are both fulfilling and lucrative.
1. Writing
Who doesn’t dream of waking up in the morning, making a warm cup of coffee, and sitting down at a writing desk? You can make that dream come true by turning to writing as a profession—it’s the perfect stay-at-home job.
There are so many different things you can write about! If you’re interested in marketing, you could try your hand at copywriting. You can produce product pages for businesses or you could create copy for websites. Whatever you’re interested in, you can find plenty of freelance writing opportunities on websites like Craigslist or Indeed.
If you love books, you might also consider writing fiction. Come up with short stories or work on that novel you’ve been dreaming up in your head. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be the next Danielle Steele (or Gillian Flynn, if you have a dark side).
2. Graphic Design
Graphic design is another creative career that you can do from your home office. There are tons of companies out there who are looking to have images designed, from logos and brochures to digital illustrations.
Graphic design requires more intensive equipment than writing does. Make sure you get a fast computer that can handle graphic design software and do some research on the best desktops if you don’t know where to start. Also make sure you get the right computer programs, like Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, to set yourself up for professional success. You can get all of Adobe’s programs with a subscription to Creative Cloud.
Look around online for freelance graphic design jobs and you use the Internet to promote your new graphic design company once you get started. Be sure to come up with an impressive logo for your business so you can demonstrate your creative prowess.
3. Blogging
We could have lumped “blogging” in with “writing,” but blogging is truly a job that’s unique in and of itself. Blogging is an amazing way to express yourself, and there’s a vast community of bloggers online who you can connect with while getting paid. If you feel like you want to share your thoughts with others, create a blog and use it as your soapbox.
You can create your own website to host your blog posts, or you can use an online blogging platform like SquareSpace. Whichever route you take, be sure to personalize the visual style of your blog and make it your own.
Blogging can be a lucrative endeavor. If you gain a large enough following, you may get to sample and review free products from a variety of businesses. You might also be able to sell ads on your website. But don’t ever feel pressured to blog about things that aren’t interesting to you. The most successful bloggers are those who post passionately about subjects of interest to them.
4. Making Handcrafted Goods
All right, let’s step away from the computer now. If you prefer to work with your hands (and we don’t mean typing), consider selling handcrafted goods. You can make items at your home and sell them in an online marketplace. There are lots of different crafts you can make, such as:
- Paintings
- Pottery
- Fine art
- Jewelry
- Clothing
- Furniture
Etsy is a popular website where you can sell your handcrafted items but you can also sign up for artisans’ markets. Set up a booth and sell your pieces to passers-by. You might also consider finding Mom-and-Pop fine art stores that are looking for locally-made products to display on their shelves.
5. Investing
Investing can be one of the most financially rewarding jobs you can do at home. Create an account with an online broker, like TD Ameritrade, and buy stocks in companies that you think are going to be very successful. As you earn dividends, buy more stock and slowly increase your wealth.
It’s important to remember that the most successful investors make long-term investments. You might have to be patient and wait for a long time for your stocks to increase in value. But you can also boost your short-term profits by buying bonds and common stock.
Write, create, invest—no matter what you pursue, take advantage of the luxuries at home and work hard at whichever job you choose!
