During the autumn and winter, it can sometimes feel like all it does is rain. Whether you are young or old, being trapped in the house with appalling weather outside can be frustrating and tedious. As a parent hearing the words ‘I’m bored’ can drive you slightly round the twist, so it’s great to have some rainy day game ideas up your sleeve in order to break up the monotony and avoid just sitting on the internet playing games or watching movies all day.
Escape Room in a Box
Games that transport you to another time and place are always popular when you are fed up with your own surroundings. An escape room in a box is a relatively new concept based on the top-rated tourist attractions escape rooms. When you visit an escape room, you are locked in a place that cannot be unlocked until you have solved the puzzles and clues that release the key. The escape room game options are great fun and entertaining for the whole family.
Within your escape room in a box, you will find everything you need to create a scenario that requires logical thinking, teamwork, and other skills in order to solve the mystery and get out of the room. Escape rooms work on a timer, so you need to be quick, and the pressure builds the longer you take to work out the correct answers. Whether your escape room has a pirate theme, a crime theme, or a hijack on a plane, there is loads of fun to be had trying to work out the answers to the riddles and puzzles you are presented with.
Chances are whatever your reason is for breaking out the escape room in a box, you are guaranteed to have loads of fun and enjoy spending time with the rest of the people you’re trapped in the house with.
Epic blanket forts
There is something quite magical about building a blanket fort inside the house. Whether you use blankets and pillows or a pop-up tent, creating a camp inside helps you escape the weather, and yet it gives you a sense of being outdoors exploring. You can have a side lamp as a campfire and use your kitchen to prepare marshmallows, and while you won’t be able to toast them over an open fire, you can still enjoy the sweet mushy goodness. Adults can always prepare the marshmallows over the stove and serve them with digestive biscuits and other chocolate and sweet treats. You could even camp in your blanket fort for the whole night, if there is no school the next morning and extend the fun for longer. Order in pizzas or cook your own, and the day is perfect!
Although it technically wouldn’t be available on a campsite, you could also combine this with some rainy-day movies alongside some delicious popcorn and drinks, and everyone will soon forget about the appalling weather outside the window. This doesn’t need to just be for the children; even the adults can enjoy making a good old blanket fort, as there is something quite comforting about it.
Hold your own Bake Off
If it looks like you’re going to be in for the duration, then why not consider holding a Bake-Off competition? See who can create the best cakes and biscuits or have one person prepare a master main course, and someone else prepare dessert. You can have fun pretending to be food critics and judging each other’s offerings, and even draw yourself some red tomatoes and green peppers for voting as they do on Ready, Steady, Cook. This is great fun and messy if you have kids involved, and one way to increase the pressure, if it’s just adults, is to create a timer and only allow a certain amount of preparation and planning.
Makeover fun and pamper sessions
If you are looking to entertain small children, then why not consider a makeover? You could open your own beauty salon offering manicures and makeup services, and a hairdresser that creates incredible hairstyles. If you’re brave enough to let the little ones loose on you, see what fantastic makeup styles they would create if you were headed to the Hollywood red carpet. You could even play dress up and create a whole scenario around where you are going and why you need the hair and makeup doing. It certainly passes the time and is really enjoyable for younger people. If you have no children in the house, then simply take time out for a manicure or pedicure and ignore the rain beating against the windows.
DIY science experiments
For something a little more educational, you could always spend the day doing DIY science experiments at home. There is plenty of information online that helps you set up some very safe yet fascinating experiments that the kids will love. What really happens when you add Mentos to Coca Cola and why? Find out this and more with some awesome science experiments at home, just don’t forget the safety goggles and stand well back.
Mobile phone treasure hunting
Send the children around the house on a treasure hunt, find a list of things they need to locate, and each time they must take a selfie of themselves with the item. You can give cryptic clues if the children are slightly older or keep it nice and basic for the younger ones. You could also keep them motivated by combining the treasure hunt for items with some well-located sweets and treats. The only condition being they are not allowed to eat them until they have finished the treasure hunt, and someone has been declared the winner.
Of course, there are plenty of other ideas for rainy days including board games, drawing and colouring, jigsaw puzzles and more. It’s always worth having a stash of these in the house so that you are never caught out and can always find something else to do when the weather won’t let you be outside.
