A Family, Beauty, Health and Lifestyle Blog
I truly believe that you cannot go wrong giving books as holiday gifts to children. Activity books are a bonus, because they are just so much fun! Rockport Publishers has a huge variety of some amazing books that any child would love to receive. A few of my favorites are their super fun Scratch and Create books!
Scratch & Create books allow your child to scratch of the dark coating on the pages of the book (with the special scratching tool provided) to reveal a fun, magical illustration underneath! These Scratch & Create books are designed for children about six years old and up. I love the idea of giving gifts that encourage a child to tap into their creativity, and does not include anything electronic!
I was given the chance to review the Scratch & Create Magical Tarot Book. (I don't believe in Tarot cards or readings, but the book is still a lot of fun.) I love the cool process of scratching away until I see a really mesmerizing design.
Scratch & Create Magical Tarot provides a complete 78-card tarot deck—just gently separate the cards by their perforation, then let your mind wander as you scratch off the dark coating to reveal the images of the Major and Minor Arcana in rich, colorful detail.
For centuries, tarot cards have guided those seeking hope, answers, and reassurance as they navigate the twists and turns of life. Meditate on these quests as you uncover the magical illustrations of this unique deck. Each page of this Scratch & Create book includes four perforated removable cards, as well as brief details about each one. The notes include alternative names for each card, the element(s) it represents, and its key meanings.
After you separate the cards, relax and be inspired as you use the specially designed tool to scratch off the dark coating to reveal the surface of each card. Relax as you watch the beautiful Tarot cards come to life, each an individually designed work of art by the illustrator Marenthe.
Use this magical deck like any other, to reflect on your life as you gain insights and inspirations in matters of love, health, wealth, home life, and more.
Rockport Publishers has several really fun Scratch & Create books to choose from, such as: The Wild Garden, Amazing Endangered Animals, Enchanted Forest and Folk Art Flowers to name a few. Which one do you think you would choose?

Endorsed by the Department of Effective Parenting and the Society for Creative Solutions, this collection of Very Official Forms offers a delightfully original way to help kids communicate their deepest feelings, desires, and secrets.
It’s hard to apologize. It’s hard to say thank you. Sometimes it’s even hard to invite someone over for a birthday party. Sign Here is a cleverly designed, slyly bureaucratic collection of “forms” makes dealing with these childhood issues a great deal less awkward and a whole lot more fun.
Issued in impressively official script and language by the Department of Regret, Remorse, and Reconciliation, the Union of Childhood Revenue, the Ministry of Dreams, and other indispensable offices, these forms help kids say some of the hard stuff: “I’ve eaten the last piece of...,” “You’re the best sister in the world,” “Thank you for buying me stuff I need,” “Thank you for buying me stuff I don’t need.” And, because it’s important to record even your most private feelings, there are forms to verify that one’s parents are, indeed, aliens; that the surprise birthday gift was not actually a surprise; that you had a really scary dream; and other conundrums not easily expressed in person.
Highly adaptable to meet the needs and desires of any boy or girl, these forms can be endlessly photocopied—and of course filed away by parents and grandparents for future reminiscences and chuckles. This book is the perfect gift for children ages 6-10, but I think teenagers would love it too!

Having little ones is an adventure! You never know what each day is going to bring. Along with all of the good stuff, there are going to be days of bumps, bruises, aches and pains, fevers and sickness. Such is life as a parent!
When a child is sick or gets injured, it is never easy to calm them down! Simple ice packs and heating pads can be intimidating to children. With
Children love stuffed animals and these products help parents try to comfort their children by giving them an animal that also acts as an ice pack or heating pad.
There are a wide range of animals and various colors of bears to choose from, ensuring that every child has a product they are happy with and comforted by.
The animals can be cooled in the freezer and heated in the microwave, allowing parents to use the animal for any form of injury or illness. Unlike usual therapeutic treatments that become smelly and old, the animals are made of natural cotton, and contain a heating/cooling element composed of a specially treated and processed corn product that eliminates molds, fungi and odors. The animals are also washable, allowing parents to use them as often as needed.
I have several of these animals. They are adorable! My eleven year-old son, Braxton is always getting bumps and bruises, so these animals are perfect to have on hand. Most recently, Braxton was sunburned at the beach, and we placed his frozen monkey pal, JoJo on his back while he slept, and it was the perfect solution to cool his sunburn. He adores his monkey!
My sweet little seven month-old granddaughter is teething. She loves to chew on her little Thermal-Aid elephant, Ellie after I have had it in the freezer. Baby Reylin enjoys cuddling with her cooled down Thermal-Aid animals on these hot summer days!
I can imagine that these animals will also be perfect during the cold winter months, too. Maybe we can put one in the microwave and warm it up to place in her car seat with her before traveling.
Thermal Aid animals are perfect for soothing:
Sprains,Strains, Muscle Soreness: Start with cold to reduce inflammation and swelling, After 48 hours, alternate hot and cold.
Headaches/Migraines: Alternate hot/cold Thermal-Aid animals on child's forehead.
Growing Pains & Leg Cramps: Lay a warm Thermal-Aid animal on the child's legs at bedtime.
Babies with Colic: A warm, not hot Thermal-Aid animal placed alongside baby's back or tummy can help soothe baby for a restful night's sleep.
Earaches: Place a warm Thermal-Aid animal on the child's ears, neck, or head.
Bug Bites/Bee Stings: A cold Thermal-Aid animal will decrease swelling and inflammation.
Flu Symptoms: Reduce fevers with cold Thermal-Aid animals, or offer comfort with warm.

NEW Ponderables. An Illustrated History of Civilization From Ancient Craft & Modern Tech.
Over 350,000 copies sold worldwide of Ponderables Series – 7th book in the series is here! Great gifts for any inquisitive mind on your list.
From the first boat to the first megaliths and ziggurat, the arch and an icehouse… the thoughts and deeds of great achievers always make great stories. Each story relates a ponderable, a weighty problem that became an invention and changed our homes, our cities, our farms, and our lives.
Combining engaging text with captivating images and helpful diagrams, renowned science writer Tom Jackson guides readers through time in ENGINEERING: An Illustrated History from Ancient Craft to Modern Technology (Shelter Harbor Press, October 25, 2016), the seventh book in this highly successful Ponderables™ series.
The history of engineering is also the history of civilization. From aerospace, marine and computer applications to genetic, electrical, and robotics, engineering shapes our world and influences just about everything we see and do. Every civilization developed new technology, a particular set of tools, machines, and construction techniques. And each civilization—the Babylonians, ancient Egyptians, the Incas, and the Romans—all rose and fell thanks to their technology.
Organized in chronological order ENGINEERING takes readers on a journey through milestone achievements in the fields of engineering:
- In 1698, Thomas Savery builds The Miner’s Friend; or, An Engine to Raise Water by Fire. It is a water pump that uses steam power. Although incredibly inefficient it is the first functioning steam engine.
In 1783, Joseph-Michael and Jacques-Ètienne Montgolfier build the first flying machine capable of carrying human passengers. It is a 30-feet wide hot air balloon, powered by an open fire and made of paper!
- In 1855, Henry Bessemer designs a new system for making steel, a strong alloy of iron and carbon. Before this invention it took 12 hours to make 1.5 tons of wrought iron. Bessemer’s converter could produce 15 tons of much stronger steel in just 20 minutes.
The first communication satellite is Echo 1, a metallic balloon launched into the upper atmosphere by NASA in 1960.
In 2007, 3.3 billion cubic feet (94 million cubic m) of sand and rock are laid down along the coast of Dubai to make Palm Jumeirah, the world’s largest artificial ocean island.
In 2016, Solar Impulse flies more than half way around the world powered only by electricity generated by solar panels on its wings.
ENGINEERING is an authoritative reference book and timeline that examines everything from from the crudely knapped hand axes of our human ancestor Homo Habilis to the mind-blowing ways in which modern engineering has improved our quality of daily life and expanded the scope of our civilization. The story of engineering is the story of humankind itself. ENGINEERING’s 100 enlightening articles explore the biggest names, grandest achievements and greatest inventions of the engineering world from prehistory all the way up to present day. Carefully curated, beautifully illustrated and addictively fun, this volume is your ultimate guide to the dreamers, thinkers, tinkerers and builders that make our world.
ENGINEERING includes a 24-page removable fold-out concertina neatly housed at the back of the book: a 12-page Timeline History of Engineering on one-side and 12 pages of Engineering Marvelsthat demonstrate what happens when construction and engineering meet great design and innovation—on the other side innovation—on the other side.

Kids look forward to finding gifts under the tree – they know to look for them there because it’s a tradition they have become accustomed to! But what if this year you added a twist by hiding a fun gift around the house and played a game to see who could find it first?
The Snipe Hunt Game from Education Outdoors is a fun activity in which two Snipes are used. The object of the game is to be the first player/team to find the other players/teams Snipe first. If the Snipes have not been found after a period of time, they start to chirp and their eyes light up. Kids are sure to get a kick out of the extra hunt for this gift.
How to Play the Snipe Hunt Game:
The Snipe hunt game can be played with two people, two teams or special * single seeker play, and incorporates both indoor/outdoor activity and good old fashion fun. The object of Snipe is Be the first team/person to find the other team/persons snipe and return it to its nest. After the players have hidden their snipe the other player will try to find it. After a period of time, if the Snipes have not been discovered, they will chirp and then their eyes will light up. Each game comes with two snipes, (named Biela and Smartin) and a Snipe nest. The packaging tells the story behind the legendary campfire animals.
My son, Braxton loves his Snipe Game. He has been hiding his Snipes around the house and then sending his Daddy or one of his siblings to go and find the Snipe. It was funny because a few nights ago, Braxton had gone to bed and I kept hearing this funny little chirping sound and was wondering what on earth it was. I thought maybe there was a bird in the Christmas tree. And then, I discovered a little Snipe with its eyes all aglow, hidden in the branches. It was so cute, and such a fun game!
