Healthful Snack Ideas for On-The-Go Moms
Certified Nutritionist Isabel De Los Rios Bites Down and Shares No-Fuss Snacks that are Healthy & Easy to Store in Your Purse, the Car, or at the Office
Snack at Work:
Guacamole is a great choice. It contains heart healthy fats from the avocados and is very filling and satisfying. Instead of dipping chips in it, cut up some celery and carrots along with some cherry tomatoes.
Organic cottage cheese with pineapple slices or fresh peach slices. Cottage cheese is jam packed with protein which will help keep your blood sugar stable and prevent any afternoon crashes. Adding some sweet
pineapple or peaches will also satisfy any sweet cravings that may creep up midafternoon.
Raw almond butter spread on celery sticks or apple slices. The combination of protein and healthy fat in the almond butter will keep you from feeling hungry while working away. Enjoy some on an apple that is full of fiber and you’ll be able to focus on your work and not on your hunger.
Waiting for a Flight:
Raw nuts are always a good snack choice! They’re easy to carry and require no refrigeration or heating. Pair them with some unsweetened dried fruit for a trail mix. The combination of healthy protein, fat and carbs will keep you from reaching for those unhealthy, oil laden trail mixes sold at the airport. Whereas raw nuts are filled with healthy fats, nuts that are roasted and cooked in oils contain oils that are now rancid from the heating process.
Leftovers from last night’s dinner – The last time I traveled, I packed leftover chicken and veggies. I had a delicious meal ready for me on the airplane. It tasted just as good cold as it had the night before. This is also a great money saver as I feel like airport food is terribly overpriced.
Hard-boiled organic eggs with raw carrots and cucumbers. Organic eggs are full of heart healthy Omega 3 fats. Omega 3’s have also been found to assist the body is burning off unwanted fat. Hard boiled eggs are easy to prepare and easy to transport.
Holiday Shopping:
Eat before you go! Instead of stopping for a breakfast burrito (yuck) or bagel sandwich, start your day with a high-energy and extremely nutritious smoothie (make sure it includes protein).
Bring your own snacks. I always make muffins (made from healthy flours like almond flour and coconut flour) on the weekends to ensure I have healthy snacks throughout the week. A shopping day is no different. I bring a muffin and a baggie of raw pecans with me while I shop.
I would definitely recommend bringing your caffeine with you (a cup of coffee made before leaving your house is a good choice in the morning). If you find you need a caffeine dose while you’re out, I usually get a small coffee from Starbucks. If I don’t have stevia with me, I just drink it black and avoid dangerous artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners have been found to be even more detrimental to weight loss and health than sugar. They have also been linked to cancer and heart disease.

Isabel De Los Rios found her passion for nutrition as a teenager. The overweight daughter and granddaughter of type 2 diabetics, Isabel was told that she was doomed to suffer from the same health problems as the generations who preceded her. Not willing to sit around waiting for this grim prediction to become a reality, she pored over every nutrition and diet book available in search of the answers to her family’s weight and health problems. This led her to personally seek out doctors and health professionals that were using nutrition to get great results (as far as health and weight loss) with their patients and clients.
She has since reached and maintained an ideal weight, is vibrantly healthy and shows no indication that conditions like diabetes will affect her as they have so many in her family. She truly enjoys a high level of wellbeing that not only surprises most people, but motivates them to achieve what Isabel has.
