One in Five Americans Suffer from Excessive Underarm Sweat
Roughly 20 percent of the US adult population says they sweat more than they’d like in their underarms and it bothers them. Many patients don’t realize that excessive sweating is a medical condition, and they go to great lengths to hide it.
Consequences Oftentimes Debilitating
For many, excessive underarm sweat is a daily struggle that causes anxiety at work, embarrassment in relationships and social settings, and avoidance of leisure activities.
According to a survey commissioned by the International Hyperhidrosis Society, 88 percent of those who suffer from excessive underarm sweat had endured negative social reactions from others, such as disgust or mockery.
Unfortunately, many people with excessive underarm sweat suffer in isolation and silence because they do not know that their condition is treatable. Only 5 percent of people who feel they perspire a lot have seen a physician about their condition.
“Sweat is embarrassing and can affect how people approach social or professional situations like company holiday parties. Picking out the right outfit to hide sweat stains can be particularly stressful and challenging,” said Dr. Carolyn Jacob, a Chicago-based dermatologist. “The perfect candidate for the miraDry Procedure is anyone who’s bothered by their underarm sweat. The procedure eliminates the sweat glands non-invasively and once sweat glands are destroyed they do not grow back, providing lasting results.”
Now a Proven, Lasting Treatment is Available: The miraDry® Procedure
Until now, treatment options have been limited to prescription-strength antiperspirants, oral medications, botulinum toxin A injections and surgery. These options are either designed to temporarily disable the sweat glands, or involve surgery which contains inherent risks.
The miraDry Procedure is the only medical device cleared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration that dramatically reduces underarm sweat and provides lasting results. The procedure delivers precisely controlled electromagnetic energy to the area under the arm where the sweat glands reside, and heats and eliminates the sweat glands. Since sweat glands do not regenerate, results are lasting. Each miraDry Procedure takes approximately one hour in the doctor’s office and the full treatment plan requires two procedures to maximize results. The procedure is non-invasive with little to no downtime, so patients can go about their normal routines after treatment.
Recent clinical data showed patients treated with the miraDry System experienced sustained improvement in sweat reduction and quality of life at 24-months post treatment. This is follow-up data to a study that assessed the efficacy and safety of the miraDry Procedure, which previously reported an average of 82 percent sweat reduction at 12- months post procedure. There are other therapies that utilize energy in treating hyperhidrosis, however there is limited data, both in number of patients and amount of follow-up, and they are not FDA approved. Only miraDry provides a lasting solution with a non-invasive procedure.
Benefits of the miraDry Procedure include:
- Dramatic reduction of underarm sweat
- Lasting results
- Non-invasive (no surgical incisions or cuts)
- Minimal to no downtime
- Performed in the physician’s office
