Types of Cosmetic Surgery and the most Common Procedures

October 16, 2020 by Juliann Leave a Comment

For people struggling with their looks, cosmetic surgery can offer a pathway back to confidence and normality. Most people have little niggles about their appearance which can easily be fixed or improved with minor surgery.

However, while cosmetic surgery is often an optional procedure, in some cases, it can be used to fix abnormalities or other problems often caused by birth irregularities, accidents, traumas or medical conditions.

The reasons for cosmetic surgery

People opt for cosmetic surgery for many different reasons. However, there are two main types of surgery that are performed:

Reconstructive medical surgery: Reconstructive surgery is often required where a patient has suffered deformation through an accident, birth defect, cancer etc. In this regard, specialists like Dr. Sheila Nazarian can perform complex reconstructive procedures that can restore both form and function with exceptional precision and care. Most medical surgery is considered a necessity for health, and the costs will frequently be covered by insurers. While reconstructive surgery can benefit aesthetic appearance, it is typically performed to improve quality of life, restore previous function and bring back a normal appearance to patients. Common types of reconstructive work include surgery after burns, reconstructing breasts after a mastectomy and cleft palette work.

Aesthetic cosmetic surgery: Aesthetic surgery is not usually seen as a medical necessity (even though most reconstructive work will also obviously improve aesthetics). Rather, San Antonio Cosmetic Surgery, or similar practices elsewhere, are usually performed purely for aesthetic reasons to improve the looks of the patient. However, there is a significant overlap between reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries. Common types of cosmetic surgery work include tummy tuck, breast lift or dermatological improvements (for example, Botox, fillers, augmentations and so on).

Five of the most common cosmetic surgeries

There is a vast range of cosmetic treatments available ranging from surgery on the body or face to skin treatments and even hair implants/removal. For such purposes, experts like Adam R. Kolker, MD, FACS Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery can be consulted, as they offer a wide range of cosmetic procedures, all tailored to meet individual aesthetic goals with a focus on natural, balanced results. These treatments often focus on refining specific features, restoring youthful contours, and achieving harmony between different areas of the face and body. However, the most popular types of cosmetic surgery are:

Dermatological treatments: Dermatology is a branch of medicine that deals specifically with skin and skin complaints. Dermatology can be used to treat patients suffering from skin problems (such as acne, psoriasis or eczema) or can also be used purely for cosmetic purposes – like Botox treatments, lifts, hair removal, rejuvenation of augmentation. Dermatological specialists like mariehayagmd.com offer a full range of medical and cosmetic treatments.

Breast augmentation: It’s quite common for women to stress about the size or shape of their breasts and augmentation procedures serve to address both. Augmentation surgeries are normally performed for cosmetic rather than medical reasons on one, or both, breasts. However, augmentation alone doesn’t correct the shape and firmness of the breasts. Alternatively, some women may opt for a breast lift Miami, or indeed one anywhere else, to enhance the contour and elevate the position of the breasts for a more youthful appearance.

Rhinoplasty (aka nose job): Rhinoplasty can be performed for medical reasons (for example, difficulty breathing or forms of birth defect) or, more commonly, for aesthetics. Surgery will typically involve reshaping or repairing nasal problems including increasing or reducing the nose size, narrowing the nostrils, changing the bridge, altering the angle of the nose or correcting problems resulting from injury.

Liposuction: Liposuction is a medical procedure used to remove fat deposits from the body. However, it is rarely performed for weight loss as such and is more for cosmetic purposes. Ultrasound is sometimes used to break down fat before it is removed using a suction cannula. Liposuction can be performed all over the body on the arms, buttocks, back, thighs, stomach and hips. It can also be used to reduce breast size in men.

Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty): Tummy tucks are used to improve the shape and definition of the abdomen, normally by removing excess fat and skin and sometimes repairing muscles. While tummy tucks will aesthetically improve the look of the abdomen, the results can only be maintained through a controlled diet and regular exercise.
