10 Italian Towns for Your Next Romantic Getaway

July 11, 2019 by Juliann Leave a Comment

If you’re looking to spend a romantic vacation with your significant other or wondering where you should go for your honeymoon, Italy is the place for you! A beautiful country of sprawling countrysides, rich history, delicious food, and magnificent cities, and not to mention passionate people. The Italian coast is one of the most alluring, sensual parts of the country, so read on for our pick of the 10 most romantic towns for you and your amore. Andiamo!

1. Capri

Located slightly off the coast of Naples and the Amalfi Coast, the Isle of Capri is one of the Italian islands that are more popular among the tourists. Once the summer escape of Roman emperors, it is a stunning island that will inspire and invigorate you. You might want to avoid this island during high season as it can get very crowded. However, the landscapes are breathtaking and there are numerous areas of the island that are less densely populated if you go during offseason (from November to April). A little tip: Take a ferry over to Capri, then rent a Vespa (how very Roman Holiday!) to get to the main port town, and cruise to the backside of the island to avoid tour groups.

2. Positano

Positano is a timelessly intoxicating town. The incredible seaside and mountainous landscape only serve to intensify its’ sensuality and beauty. Not only that, Positano is a postcard-worthy destination with colorful houses descending from the hilltop against the blue Adriatic Sea.

You can spend your days frolicking on the beach and your evenings enjoying a romantic dinner with your partner. You can find some of the world’s best pasta and seafood dishes here. If you prefer to do something more adventurous, you can go for a hike with your significant other down the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei).

3. Atrani

Atrani is perfect if you wish to enjoy the gorgeous view of the Amalfi Coast while avoiding the crowds. It’s located 20km from Positano, but tourists rarely come here. It’s a great place if you want to have a genuine Italian coastal town experience while escaping the tourist crowds.

Moreover, you’ll be walking distance from Amalfi if you choose to visit here. There’s even a tunnel for you to walk to the well-known town while avoiding cars and buses!

4. Cala Gonone

Located in Sardinia, this charming town is adjacent to some of the most alluring beaches on Sardinia. The island of Sardinia itself is very big and will take quite a few hours to drive from one end to the other. You’ll have to rent a car to get around the island, but do note that the best beaches there are not accessible by driving.

You can rent a boat from Cala Gonone to visit the captivating beaches of Cala Luna, Cala Goloritze and many others along the east coast.

5. Mondello

The south of Italy is one of the most breathtaking places in the world, with Sicily at the center of it. Its distinctive history makes Sicily feel a little different from the rest of Italy. While most people speak Italian, many people there also speak the Sicilian dialect, rather uncommonly spoken elsewhere in Italy. Pre-Renaissance, the different areas of what is now Italy spoke a multitude of languages. The language we call “Italian” today is actually a variant of the old Tuscan language because of famous figures such as Leonardo and Dante.

Mondello is the epitome of Sicily: crystal clear, blue waters, soft white sand, mighty mountains lining the coast, and delectable local food. It’s the perfect vacation getaway, where the pace of life is slow. It’s tranquil and calm, as though it’s a whole other world by itself.

6. Cefalu

This is another town in Sicily that you should go to with your partner. Admittedly, the beaches aren’t the best you can find, but the town on its’ own is one of the most stunning and remarkable towns you’ll find in Italy.

The food here already makes the visit worthwhile, but the beautiful landscapes and warm, friendly locals make Cefalu a truly unforgettable place. There is also an open-air market in town on the weekends, as well as numerous other outdoor activities, such as hiking or climbing the Roka.

7. Bellagio

Bellagio sits on a peninsula, giving you incredible views of the lake on all three sides of the town. Situated on the coast of Lake Como in the north of Italy, Bellagio is a picturesque, endearing and vibrant town. There is not much “to do” here, so this town is perfect if you want a relaxing yet romantic getaway with your partner. You can take a boat ride out on the lake to escape the hustle and bustle of the town and enjoy each other’s company.

Do take note that visiting here is expensive, and many of the restaurants are crowded and overpriced. However, you might want to try Alle Darsene di Loppia, the best restaurant in town where George Clooney was spotted once.

8. Cinque Terre

The Five Villages Hike along the Mediterranean region of Cinque Terre is one of the most spectacular hikes you can go on in Italy. Cinque Terre translates to “five lands”, and each of the five lands is vibrant and welcoming. The five lands are Riomaggiore, Vernazza, Corniglia, Monterosso al Mare, and Manarola. Vernazza and Manarola are the most crowded. Monterosso may get a little crowded, but there is always tons of beach space. Riomaggiore and Corniglia are the least busy towns, and bumping into tourists is unlikely.

If you love the warm weather, make sure to visit during the summer months of April to September. If not, you can visit during the offseason where you won’t have to deal with the tourist crowds. You can make a day trip down to Cinque Terre from Florence, as staying in Cinque Terre itself is rather expensive.

9. Portofino

Further north of Monterosso lies Portofino, which is essentially an extension of Cinque Terre. It’s a fishing village on the Italian Rivera coastline, where you can find pastel-colored houses, high-end boutiques, and little fishing boats and super-yachts at the harbor.

There is not as much to do here compared to the other towns along the same coast, but it’s worth a visit if you’re around the area. You can also walk over to a little town called Santa Margherita from Portofino if you wish to do a bit more exploring.

10. Naples

If you love pizza, you’ll love Naples. It’s not the first city in mind when you talk about coastal towns — it’s not quaint or clean or lined with beautiful beaches. However, pizza was invented here, and it has the best pizza in the world! Some restaurants worth checking out would be Sorbillo, Da Michele, and Starita.

The beaches of the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento are just a short drive away from Naples, so this would be a great place for you and your significant other. You can enjoy the rich history and culture of Naples, have some great pizza, then head down to the beach to catch a gorgeous sunset. It’s the perfect romantic getaway for you and your partner.

Italy is a magnificent country with many romantic towns for you and your significant other to visit. If you are visiting the coastal cities, don’t forget to pack along some floats. Our favorite ones are from https://thefloatys.com/ with their a huge selection. We hope that this list has helped you narrow your choices for your next romantic getaway! Ciao amore!
