10 Signs You Have an Unhealthy Gut and What to Do About It

May 21, 2024 by Juliann

An unhealthy gut can cause a wide range of symptoms and health issues. Here are 10 common signs of an unhealthy gut, plus tips on what you can do to restore gut health naturally.

Bloating and Fatigue

Feeling bloated, especially after eating, is one of the most common signs of an unhealthy gut. Bloating is often accompanied by abdominal cramps, gas and fatigue. An imbalance of gut bacteria can cause inflammation in the gut lining, leading to these symptoms. Getting enough sleep, managing stress levels and eating slower can help reduce bloating and fatigue. You can also find more tips on how to help with bloating and fatigue here.

Food Sensitivities

Developing new food sensitivities, like gluten or dairy intolerance, may indicate your gut is unhealthy. Leaky gut syndrome allows undigested food particles to enter the bloodstream, triggering an immune reaction. Keeping a food journal can help identify problem foods. Removing problem foods and repairing gut health can alleviate symptoms.

Constipation

Constipation is characterised by infrequent, difficult bowel movements. It’s commonly caused by poor diet, lack of exercise, dehydration and imbalanced gut bacteria. Increasing fibre intake, staying hydrated and taking probiotics may relieve constipation.

Diarrhoea

Frequent loose bowel movements signify an imbalance between good and bad gut bacteria. Diarrhoea can also result from food sensitivities, infections and reactions to medications. Avoiding dairy, alcohol, caffeine and sugar can help reduce diarrhoea episodes.

Nutritional Deficiencies

An unhealthy gut has difficulty properly absorbing nutrients from food. Symptoms of nutritional deficiencies include exhaustion, poor immunity, skin issues and hair loss. Work with a nutritionist or doctor to identify and correct deficiencies through diet changes or supplements.

Skin Conditions

Many chronic skin problems like acne, rosacea and eczema stem from a compromised gut. Healing the gut by removing trigger foods and boosting gut bacteria may significantly improve skin health. Managing stress is also important.

Sugar Cravings

Cravings for sugar and refined carbs indicate unhealthy gut flora. Sugar feeds harmful bacteria, which can multiply and take over, creating a vicious cycle. Balancing your gut with probiotic foods and supplements helps reduce sugar cravings.

Mood Issues

An unhealthy gut environment promotes inflammation, which is linked to mood disorders like anxiety and depression. Support mental health by adopting an anti-inflammatory diet, managing stress and exercising regularly. Consider counselling or therapy for mood issues.

Autoimmune Conditions

Autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and celiac disease are associated with leaky gut syndrome. Healing the gut lining with collagen supplements, glutamine and eliminating food triggers may help reverse autoimmune symptoms.

Weight Changes

Gaining or losing weight without making diet and exercise changes can signal an unhealthy gut. Poor nutrient absorption, imbalance of gut bacteria and inflammation can all contribute to unexplained weight fluctuations. Try a gut-healing diet and talk to your doctor.

What to Do About an Unhealthy Gut

Seeking testing and support from your doctor can help identify the root causes of your gut issues. Try incorporating more prebiotic and probiotic foods, drinking bone broth, managing stress and exercising regularly to improve gut health naturally. With patience and consistency, it is possible to repair even very damaged guts and restore your health.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
