Good hygiene has always been important, and, in the current climate, it is even more important that we teach children healthy hygiene habits as early as possible. Lessons taught by pre-schoolers can last a lifetime and help keep infections at bay.
Parents can teach little ones about germs and ways in which they can help protect themselves from infection and prevent them from spreading.
Most kids reach an age where they want to be independent and will ask to do things for themselves. Take advantage of this milestone and encourage your child with simple, easy to follow instructions, that form good hygiene habits to take them into their adult lives.
1. Oral Health
Helping your little one maintain clean teeth and gums can prevent an array of health issues such as bad breath, cavities, and even heart disease in later life. Teach your child to brush in the morning and at night or better still, if time allows, after every meal.
To ensure children brush for long enough, you can get them to sing the ‘ABC’ song or a favorite nursery rhyme lasting for two minutes. This way, as they get older, they can then concentrate on the technique and will have developed the fine motor skills to begin flossing for themselves.
There are a number of novelty toothbrushes available that either light up, play music, or feature favorite cartoon characters that help to make toothbrushing fun for kids. Speak to your dental practitioner for further advice.
2. Handwashing
The key to thorough and effective handwashing is making sure to clean them for long enough. Quite often, little ones are easily distracted and will not put enough time in their hands. If this is the case, it can be tempting to wash your child’s hands for them. Try and refrain from doing this because practice really does make perfect, and kids will soon make it a healthy habit.
As with brushing teeth, parents can make handwashing fun and well-timed by singing a song while kids wash their hands. A good one to use is “Happy Birthday,” as it is just about the right length.
Ensure kids are washing their hands before eating, after being outside and every time they use the bathroom. Explain to kids that by washing their hands regularly that they are killing germs and helping to prevent themselves from becoming sick. If you need help explaining this in a child-friendly manner, you can always ask a doctor for advice. 3. Bathing
Kids can begin bathing themselves from the age of 6 or 7 years; however, this should always be supervised, and children should not be allowed to run the taps.
Bath times can be made fun in a host of different ways, from adding toys and water pourers to playing music and using bubbles. Make sure that any products used are gentle on your child’s skin, and that tear-free shampoo is also used. Allowing kids to take control of their own hygiene from an early age creates healthy habits and ensures a safer future.
