5 myths about formula feeding

November 12, 2022 by Juliann

Myths are created extremely easily and are debunked even faster. Baby formula has received a bad reputation a long time ago because of the problems caused by early baby formula products. Things have changed these days, and you can rest assured that baby formula is much healthier and more nutritious than before.

Myth #1 Baby formula causes allergies

Allergies are often caused by genetics and other factors, and they are rarely influenced by the intake of some products. When it comes to baby formula, things are completely opposite. Baby formula actually reduces the risks of allergies in babies, and recent studies have shown that there is no connection between baby formula and the risks of developing any kind of food allergy. However, you should still be careful when switching to baby formula and make sure that your baby doesn’t have any allergies before giving the formula to them.

Myth #2: Formula destroys the bond between you and your baby

There are many ways to explore the connection between you and your child, and breastfeeding is just one of many opportunities for you two to bond. What matters most is the skin-to-skin contact and everyday verbal and non-verbal communication. It’s best for your baby to see your face often, so your child will get used to your more quickly and see your emotions. Hold your baby more often, and talk or sing to them, especially when you bottle-feed them.

Myth #3: Formula is not rich in nutrients and vitamins

One of the best things about the baby formula is the fact that it is filled with useful ingredients that will help your baby grow. All formulas available in the market are closely regulated, which means that each bottle contains just the right amount of everything your baby needs. And there are also tons of options to choose from. For example, just take a look at the Hipp pre vs stage 1 comparison–both formulas are nutritious and work well for babies of different group ages. All you need to do is just choose the right formula brand for you, and you’ll have nothing to worry about.

Myth #4: Babies who are formula-fed grow up to be less smart than babies who are breastfed

This myth has logical roots since when the formulas were first introduced globally, they were not as good as they are today. However, these days things are much different. Modern studies have shown that there are no cognitive advantages of breastfeeding, meaning that IQ is not influenced by the type of milk your child consumes.

Myth #5: Baby formula is a cause of obesity

There are many things that might cause obesity, but food formula is not one of them. What can be the actual cause is overfeeding. It’s possible that your baby might gain some weight during formula feeding, but it has nothing to do with ingredients. To know when you are at risk of overfeeding, pay attention to the signs that indicate that your baby is full, such as turning their head away from the bottle. What you could also do is create a feeding schedule and make sure that you follow the instructions from either a formula package or your doctor.

To sum it up

There are always many myths surrounding various products for babies. Some of them are true, but most of them are very far from being a reality. This is why it’s important to always conduct your own research and ensure that you know what the benefits of drawbacks of the chosen product are. Good luck to you!

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
