What to Consider When Starting a Family and Settling Down

February 4, 2021 by Juliann

Starting a family and settling down can be a wonderful stage of life for many people. However, it is important that you do not rush into settling down when you are not ready or ill-prepared to do so. Then, before you settle down, there are several elements of your life that you should organize that will put you in the best position possible to start a family.

Your Finances

Firstly, you must check your finances before you settle down, as these can determine every element of your new life, from your ability to have kids to the size of the family home that you are considering buying. Before you start a family, you need to make sure that your financial situation is stable; for instance, you need to make a regular income. Once you have achieved this, you need to work with your partner to establish a budget that can help you care for your family long into the future.

Finding the Right Family Home

However, to give your future kids the best life possible and to enjoy the life that you have always planned, you should need to find the right family home. As well as checking features such as its size, the size of its garden, and the number of bedrooms it has, you should also consider the safety of the area that it is in, the quality of the schools nearby, and your access to local facilities. You also need to check whether the location that you want to move to is good for starting a family, with every city having both its advantages and disadvantages. The Strength of Your Relationship

Before you start a family, though, you should consider your relationship’s strength and whether you can see yourself together in the long-term. This is because relationship breakdowns can be costly and can also hurt any children that you have. You should also consider cementing your relationship by choosing to get married. Although this is not the right option for every couple, it can help you to be more financially secure.

Your Career

If you have put years of your life into a career, it is unlikely that you will want to separate yourself from it even when you choose to settle down. Then, before you start a family, you need to consider whether you are ready to make career sacrifices and, if not, how you are going to successfully balance the two.

Support

When you plan to settle down and start a family, you are likely to see your life change beyond recognition, which can be difficult to cope with at first. Rather than struggle alone, you should make sure that you have access to the support you need before making any big decisions. For instance, you might consider moving to an area where you can be close to your relatives, who may be able to help you with childcare.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
