My dog Banner is the sweetest dog ever. He is nearing his fourteenth year of life. We adopted Banner from the humane society when he was three years old.
Banner is not just a pet, he is a family member, and we try every single day to show Banner we love him. I would like to share the top five ways that you can show your dog that you love them.
1. Play with them!
All dogs need exercise. There’s nothing Banner loves more than having somebody throw him a ball or even a stick for him to chase. If your dog doesn’t enjoy catching or fetching, then find something he does enjoy. Perhaps tug-of-war? Buy your pup a variety of toys and see what he shows the most interest in. Then, you can make up some sort of a game that is a special way for the two of you to bond. Playing with your dog is the greatest way to help him get some exercise.

2. Make sure they have a cozy place to sleep
Now, this does not mean that your dog needs to sleep with you on your bed. That is entirely up to you. I do know that it doesn’t work for my to have our big dog up on our bed. Besides, his hips are sore, and I wouldn’t want him to get hurt climbing up that high. Banner has a very comfy memory foam bed that we bought to help support his poor aging frame. Make sure you find a pet bed that pampers as well as comforts your pup so that they can properly rest up from a long day of play.
3. Cuddle them, pet them, talk to them
Your dog needs physical contact, and plenty of interaction as well as reassurance that he is loved. Did I mention belly rubs? Banner cannot get enough of them! Whenever I talk to Banner, I tend to use a softer voice, kind of like I use when I am talking to a baby. Banner tilts his head and kind of lifts one of his ears as if he is intently listening to me.
4. Take them to the vet for yearly check ups
Part of showing your dog that you love him is by taking him to the vet for yearly check ups. Yes, your pup may not feel that you are showing them love when they are getting their shots of course, but just give them a special treat and some extra cuddles to make that time seem less scary. These trips to the vet will help to ensure that your dog lives the longest, healthiest life possible.
