Big Moments for Little Children

November 29, 2021 by Juliann

The first few years of a child’s life will be full of big moments. It is a time of rapid change and new discoveries. We will explore some of the milestones that you and your baby will experience.

First day in daycare

Can you believe it? Time with a baby goes so quickly. Blink, and you will miss it. So inevitably, you will need to think about daycare for your growing child.  But worry not, there are various Childhood Education Programs designed to provide a safe and engaging space for your child to thrive. By allowing your child the freedom to explore their surroundings and learn how to go to the toilet and get dressed, you have started the journey of how to prepare your child for nursery.

Arriving home

Assuming that you gave birth at the hospital, the simple act of returning home is a big deal. For the first time, you are responsible for a small wriggling human being. This can seem daunting or even entirely overwhelming. However, it’s important not to be too hard on yourself or your partner. Together you will quickly learn what your baby needs and, to some extent, be able to understand what different cries mean.

Prepare for arrival

Make sure that your family knows exactly when to expect your arrival. in the early days, it can be helpful for another adult, such as a new grandparent, to be available to help with the day-to-day running of your home.  There is no reason why you should be doing the cleaning, shopping, or even entertaining. You can delegate these jobs to other family members while you and your partner bond with your new arrival.

Don’t be afraid to be alone

While family can be a big help, after a while, they can become annoying. You and your partner need to spend time alone with the baby so that you can bond. Don’t be afraid to ask visitors to leave if you are tired.

Sleeping in their own room

For the first six months or so, your baby will probably sleep with you in your bedroom. This makes sense when your baby isn’t sleeping through the night as it’s less disruptive for you to be close.  However, you will want your baby to sleep in their room eventually. Although, as a parent, peace of mind can be difficult to come by, a baby monitor can go some way to help as you can monitor your baby from a distance.

At first, your baby may complain about sleeping in a different room. This is entirely natural. At one time, it was thought best to allow a baby to self-soothe or to learn to stop crying. Today that advice has changed; babies will learn self-soothing techniques naturally as part of their development.

Crawling and first steps

Babies develop at their own rate and begin to crawl and take their first steps when ready. Babies who are carried around a lot may be slower to crawl and then walk. However, they will all learn eventually, and when you do, the fun will really start. It’s surprising just how far a baby can crawl or toddle!

To help protect your little one, it is important to childproof your home. You may also want to remind grandparents about childproofing and just how quickly a crawling child can move around.

Potty training

Potty training can be an ordeal for mother and baby, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s also totally normal for them to get wet during these events, don’t worry. However, toilet training is not something that should be rushed. Your baby will develop at their own pace, and there are no real truths about how long it will take. If you think that you are ready to start toilet training, look for some advice elsewhere on the web. The important thing about this stage is to be patient with yourself and your child.

Getting dressed

Eventually, your child will understand that clothes are something to wear. This is a big step and you will want to make it as easy as possible. If you start with easy-to-put-on clothing, such as t-shirts or zip-up jackets, your child will find it easier to learn how to dress. Your child will also start wanting to choose what to wear; you can make it easier for your   child to choose suitable clothing by offering them a choice of what you think is appropriate.

You and your baby will experience many more milestones in the first few years together, but those are for you to learn and experience for yourself. This is an exciting and sometimes scary time, but you will wonder how they went by so quickly in years to come.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
