How to Save Money When Shopping for Home Appliances

December 8, 2021 by Juliann

Appliances are the most expensive purchases you make in your home. While saving money when shopping is essential, the quality of the appliances should guide your purchase. This is because quality appliances serve you longer and are convenient in functionality. When shopping for appliances, consider the available space to ensure you don’t buy items that can fit in.

Look at the energy guide labels to determine the energy consumption rates. This ensures that the appliances don’t cost more in the long run. Consider the delivery and installation costs, payment plans, and warranties. Here’s how to save money when shopping for home appliances.

1.    Wait for a sale or an offer

Offers are also an excellent way to save on new appliances. For example, you can get an offer on cookers, fridges, and microwaves. The catch on such offers is usually, buy two or more of the qualifying appliances at a considerable discount. However, it’s always good to compare prices with other stores dealing in the same quality of appliances to ensure the offer isn’t a scam.

You may also consider buying kitchen appliances at the end of fall as that’s when they often go on sale. Research to find out if there are any upcoming sales and wait to take advantage of the price drops.

2.    Buy the previous year’s model

While newer models come with improved features and efficiency, they are costly. Since the upgrade may not always be so significant that you miss it, going for the last year’s model is a better option as their prices drop as soon as the new ones enter the market. Major appliance brands usually release new models between September and December, making it ideal for taking advantage of the previous year’s models.

3.    Shop at the scratch and dent section

A small dent or a scratch on an appliance can save you a lot of money. Major appliance dealers usually stock blemished appliances that could have been dented or scratched during shipment. While you may prefer brand new appliances, dent and scratch appliances are an excellent money saver. However, it’s essential to ensure that the damage is just cosmetic and doesn’t affect the appliance’s performance. Confirm if the scratch and dent appliances’ warranties still apply.

4.    Go for what you need

Appliance prices increase depending on their features. This is why choosing appliances with only the features you need can help save you money. Before going shopping and based on your lifestyle, make a list of the features you need in your appliances to avoid buying a costly appliance with features you’ll never use.

5.    Consider appliance sizes

While large appliances may be attractive, you may not fully utilize them, leading to unnecessary additional costs. Looking at your family usage and size, go for sizes that appropriately suit your needs. This may not save you money during purchase, but future utility bills. For example, a large fridge that you can’t fill up to the recommended capacity ends up consuming a lot of unnecessary energy. In contrast, one that you can fill beyond capacity consumes a lot of energy and may even get damaged.

Endnote

Appliances are costly and getting them at a lower price without compromising quality can be a relief. Use the above tips to save money the next time you shop for home appliances.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
