Quick Tips to Help You Prepare Your Home for a Baby

January 28, 2022 by Juliann

If you are about to welcome a new baby into your home – congratulations! This is a very exciting time and certainly something to celebrate. While you might be keen to meet your little one and hold them for the first time, you will first need to prepare your home for their arrival. There are many things to think about when you are counting down the days, but here is a quick guide to help you cover the basics at home.

Prepare Their Room

You might prefer to have your baby’s crib situated in your bedroom for the first few months. Some parents find this arrangement to be easier, but this will be entirely up to you. Nonetheless, you will need to prepare a bedroom for your child before they arrive mainly because you might not have a lot of time or energy to do this at a later date, so this is a bit of preparation that you will be thankful for months from now. Decorating the nursery in lovely soothing tones, stocking it with toys and other essential accessories for your little one can be a fun project for you to do while you wait for your due date.

Buy Your Essentials

Preparing the nursery is one thing, but you’ll also need to stock up on all the baby essentials like strollers, baby carriers, slings, and so on. These items can all get expensive, but you can look at getting second-hand items to help you save. Many people give away their old baby stuff for free or for a smaller price which is ideal. Alternatively, you can check out these baby deals for further savings.

Deep Clean and Declutter

You want to make sure that your home is a healthy living environment for you and your baby, which is why a thorough deep clean and declutter is worth doing before you bring them home with you. It’s a great opportunity to create more space at home for the baby’s things which you will certainly need. If you think the storage solutions in your home could be improved, you should also look into this before your baby arrives, as you will likely need as much of it as possible to keep your home tidy and organized.

Batch Cook Meals

Another thing you might want to do in the week or two before your baby arrives is batch-cooking some meals to put in the freezer. When you’re looking after a newborn baby, you won’t have a lot of time or energy to cook nutritious meals from scratch, but you must be eating healthy foods that are part of a balanced diet rather than living off of takeout or ready meals. Prepare some of your favorite dishes that freeze well so you can defrost them and quickly throw them onto a plate when you have a spare moment to eat.

There are many things you will need to do at home to prepare for the arrival of a new baby, but the above are a few of the key highlights you need to remember.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
