Holding Avery is a beautifully written memoir about a baby girl named Avery who never got to take her first breath, due to an umbilical cord accident. Baby Avery was a very much wanted little girl who was born to her Mommy, Heidi and her Daddy, Chris . 

Heidi’s story details her journey through the loss of her daughter and how Avery’s death rocked her world, turning a blissful existence into a real-life nightmare loaded with chaos and guilt. She explains how she coped with the guilt of her loss,and how she learned not to blame herself for it, and got onto the path to healing. 

Avery’s story is a heartbreaking one indeed that needed to be told. More often than not, when a baby is stillborn, there are well-meaning people who just say the wrong things, or they avoid the grieving parents because they don’t know quite what to say.

A stillborn baby’s life, Avery’s life~ is a life that mattered, a life of a child who did indeed leave her mark upon the world, even though she did not get to stay.
Heidi’s book is one of a kind, and will definitely help people to understand the taboo of stillbirth. There are grieving mommies who are struggling with the identity of being a ‘childless mother’. Heidi emphasizes that the most important thing to remember is that you are still a mother. 
Heidi’s mission is keeping Avery’s legacy alive so that her little brothers will know her. Avery was a person who made a difference in this world. She will never be forgotten.
I enjoyed reading this book because I feel that I got to know who Avery was through her mother’s perfect detailing. I only wish I could tell a story the way Heidi does. She is a very talented writer who has a way with words. I have never dealt with a stillbirth, but through reading ‘Holding Avery’ I feel that I have learned how I could be of comfort to a mommy who has lost a baby, as well as what not to say. I’m very thankful that Heidi shared her story with us. It was beautifully told and definitely touched my heart.
