Dunkin’ Donuts just announced that its powdered sugar will no longer contain titanium dioxide — a whitening agent that you can also find in sunscreen, toothpaste and even paint. The scary part? It is also one of the ingredients found in many popular hair vitamins and supplements.
“Titanium dioxide is used for thickening, whitening and lubricating products typically. It is also pretty cheap to use,” explains Carla Rivas, co-founder of the all natural hair growth vitamin Hair La Vie. (Hair La Vie is made without titanium dioxide and does not contain synthetic additives, fillers or binders.)
“The long term effects have never been fully tested. One shorter test was completed by the Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety that concluded that titanium dioxide may be a human carcinogen. It’s been linked to cancer, allergies, autoimmunity and organ system toxicity. We didn’t want any cheap fillers in Hair La Vie and decided to avoid any ingredients that aren’t completely natural and safe for our consumers. If it doesn’t add nutritional value to our vitamin, we don’t really see the point of putting it in the product.”
How to avoid this when shopping in the future?
“When looking for a good vitamin, always check out the “other ingredients” section and avoid products with things like phthalates, magnesium stearate or silicon dioxide,” notes Rivas.
