4 Simple Ways To Personalize a Kids Bedroom

August 12, 2020 by Juliann

Your young one is starting to grow up and now has a mind of their own. They’re beginning to become a person with their own interests, thoughts, and feelings. As parents, we need to embrace these things and let them be who they are, starting with their personalizing their bedroom.

One of the best ways to start giving your children freedom is to let them design their own bedroom with personal touches. Having trouble thinking of ideas? We’re going to go over four simple ways to personalize your kid’s bedroom.

Custom Paintings

Adding decorations to the walls is a great way to change up a room without doing anything permanent. As soon as your child grows out of those images, you can easily replace them with new ones.

You can have an artist paint things for your children’s room. All you have to do is send them some great ideas and then you’ll have custom paintings to fill their space. This is a great option when you can’t find the perfect ones online or in a store.

You can also add artwork to the room by letting your children draw something and then framing it. They’ll feel proud that their creativity is hung up, and your little one can choose which one they like best. Once they outgrow it, you can keep it for a gallery wall when they’re older.

Chalk Wall

If your little ball of joy has a habit of drawing on the walls, tables, or surfaces that you don’t want drawing on, then investing in a chalk wall is a great idea. When put on the wall, there is paint that turns into the same material as a chalkboard.

Your kid can doodle all they want, and you can wipe it off with a wet towel just like a chalkboard. It can be used to help with homework or play games, which will create a room filled with positive memories for them.

This is the perfect idea for children who change what they like often. If their favorite thing is the jungle right now, you can help them draw that. If in a month they’re really into cars, it’s a quick fix to change the decorations in their room by using the chalkboard to envision new designs.

Emphasize Their Hobbies

All children have activities they love to do. Creating a space where they can do these things will show them that you care about their hobbies. It will encourage them to spend more time doing them, and they’ll develop even more.

For example, if your child loves to read, help them be most comfortable possible – if it’s in their beds before sleep, make sure to find a good mattress, cozy sheets, proper pillow. Add a bookcase, and a unique reading lamp, so it’ll be a fun, dedicated place to learn. Instead, if your child is taking dance classes, prepare a small area with a dance floor, a mirror, and a ballet bar.

They’ll be more likely to do these hobbies when they have a particular space for them.

Let Them Design

As much as we want our child’s bedroom to look like a magazine photo, it’s not always what they want. You have the power to design your whole house how you want to, let them create their room.

If they want bright yellow walls and green curtains, let them! When they want a type of comforter that you know is never going to match the room, buy it. They’ll feel a sense of self when they walk into their room, knowing they picked out their own things.

You can use this as a lesson in responsibility too. If you allow them to create a space of their own, they have to take care of it. You can set up some rules like making their beds every morning, cleaning it on the weekends, and helping you put their clothes and toys away.

While designing their space, it’s also helpful to guide them toward furniture that’s both fun and functional. Pieces that help them stay organized will make tidying up feel easier and more manageable. As an example, storage beds for kids are a great option for combining style with built-in storage solutions, especially in smaller bedrooms. This way, kids can enjoy their personalized space while learning the value of keeping it clutter-free.

The Bottom Line

At some point, your child is going to have a mind of their own. They might not like exactly what you loved as a kid, but that’s fine. You should embrace what makes them unique, and a great way is to personalize their bedrooms.

Ways you can do this is by having custom paintings, paint a chalkboard wall, embrace their hobbies, and help design and take care of their room.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.
