Why Do Parents Separate? It’s Not Always What You Think

December 14, 2023 by Juliann Leave a Comment

We like to think we know the reasons parents separate. Things like arguments over money and infidelity spring to mind.

However, those are almost always proximate causes. These events are merely consequences of the underlying reasons for the breakup.

The purpose of this post is to look at some of the reasons why people split up and what really goes on.

Navigating Past Emotional Baggage

One reason people split up is past emotional baggage. One or both partners might have had a challenging experience and haven’t properly processed it, leading to all sorts of troublesome or challenging behaviors.

For instance, some partners have unresolved emotional trauma or insecurities they aren’t properly aware of. Some might also have unhealthy coping mechanisms, including avoidant attachment.

You never quite know when these traumas are going to rear their ugly heads. However, you can be sure that they will at some point during your relationship.

The Emotional Impact Of Children

Couples can also separate because of the emotional impact on children. Kids can throw a spanner into the works, changing the nature of the relationship and preventing one or both parties from continuing as normal. Children are a major factor in separation, according to https://www.bestlawaz.com/. Many couples decide to split but have to make plans for their kids, which is difficult in itself.

Interestingly, it’s not always the kids themselves that create the difficulties. Instead, it is the change in the family situation from two individuals by themselves to a group of people, all having to share the same household.

Societal Expectations

Another reason relationships can break down is due to societal expectations. One partner might have a specific view of how the relationship needs to proceed, and that might conflict with the reality on the ground.

For example, a partner might believe that a successful marriage is only possible with a larger house. This person might think that additional bedrooms are essential for when children come along.

At the same time, the other partner might not earn sufficient income to pay the mortgage, leading to conflict. It might not be possible to get a big enough house that suits everyone’s needs.

Cultural pressures can also be a factor. One member of the relationship might want a particular religious or cultural experience, while the other may not, particularly when it comes to having kids.

Economic Pressures

Finally, economic pressures can take a toll on marriages. Incentive structures across the economy make it challenging for any partnership to establish a traditional family structure. Taxes apply disproportionately to single earners compared to joint-income households, making it harder for one parent to work and the other to care for the children.

However, there are other factors at play, according to https://www.americanprogress.org/. For example, higher housing costs are particularly hard on families. Price increases mean that families must dedicate more resources to maintaining their properties, meaning that there is less left over for holidays and other experiences together. It also means that there is constant financial pressure, preventing anyone from relaxing.
