Dealing With Your Parents Getting Older As A Parent Yourself

December 21, 2023 by Juliann

As a parent yourself, it can be quite tough to watch your parents get older. Sometimes it’s hard because they are your parents and you love them, so not wanting them to grow older is natural. Sometimes it’s hard because you know that one day you will be getting older and your kids will be in your position. And sometimes it’s hard because you don’t want to get to a point where they are no longer here with you anymore. But, you have got to deal with this to the best of your ability, especially when you have little eyes on you. How can you do this? Let’s have a look.

Try To Understand What Is Happening

First up on the list you need to try to understand what is happening yourself. If your parents are getting older but they are in good health then there’s really nothing to worry about at the moment. However, if they start to get sick or if they develop some kind of condition, you need to do your best to understand what that means. What the condition entails, if they are going to need extra help, when they are going to need help and so on. If it’s a progressive illness then you also need to try and understand the different stages.

You need to understand so that you can explain this to your kids when they ask, as their emotions are going to need to be managed by you as well if they are younger. It’s hard, but you’ve got to do it.

Offer Help And Support Where You Can

As your parents get older, they are going to need a little more help and support from you. They might not want to admit it in the beginning as they don’t want to feel as though they are burdening you, but older people struggle with certain things. For example, they may be limited in their mobility these days compared to what they used to be, so they may need you to assist them with basic things such as laundry.

Of course you are not going to be able to do everything for them, but you can do your best. Help out and support where you can, and they are going to appreciate this more than you know.

Help Them Sort Out A Plan

Finally, if you are trying to help your parents sort their life out then the conversation of care homes might crop up. If it does then make sure everybody is being honest about what they want. Children often feel obliged to look after ageing parents as they looked after them as young children. However, what if you have children yourself and you don’t have enough room for everyone. There are care homes out there that can accommodate for your elderly parents, even if they don’t have any medical needs. If they do have medical complications or cognitive decline then they may need specialist care.

We hope you found this information helpful and that it gave you a better understanding of how you can help your parents when you have children yourself. Don’t stress or feel bad about not having much time to offer, they do understand and they don’t love you any less.

Welcome to Beautiful Moms

Hi! I’m Juliann, a wife to my wonderful husband, Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I first started Beautiful Moms Blog in 2008, my goal was to connect with and support other moms who were in the thick of raising young children. It became a creative outlet where I could share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with companies that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It’s so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. I have always believed that every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she’s in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms Blog has grown and evolved right along with me. Today, my children are adults, and I have embraced the blessings of being a grandma. My passion for encouraging women hasn’t changed—it has simply expanded to include every season of motherhood, from pregnancy and the newborn years to raising teenagers, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

I’m excited to have my daughter, Myelie, as a contributor to Beautiful Moms. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood. She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a home wherever life takes you.

Together, we’re here to support women through every age and stage of motherhood—from pregnancy to menopause—with helpful advice, honest product recommendations, beauty and wellness tips, and plenty of encouragement along the way.

We are PR Friendly and love working with great companies!
