5 Tips For Starting Afresh After a Divorce

March 7, 2024 by Juliann

Going through a divorce is one of the most stressful experiences in life. Even if you and your former partner are on relatively good terms, there’s still the hell of paperwork, lawyers, and putting on a brave face for the kids.

But once you are through the process and on the other side, there is no need to feel bad about your life choice. You have made the decision to move away from a relationship that isn’t working, and you now have the opportunity to make a new start and begin your life fresh. You should see this as the time to make a difference and do all the things you couldn’t do before. Now you have a blank slate to work with, and anything is possible.

Although it may seem difficult and painful at first, this could be the best thing that ever happened to you. Here are five tips for transforming your life after a divorce.

Accept your new situation

Every divorce is different, and every newly single person finds themselves in a different situation. Hopefully, with the help of a top divorce attorney, you have reached a settlement you are happy with. But whatever financial, social, and emotional state you are now in, it’s time to accept your new life circumstances. Be grateful for the positives: your children, your health, your freedom. Try not to focus on the regrets and the “what ifs.” Everything happens for a reason, and you can’t move forward if you are constantly looking back.

Feel your feelings

A divorce is an emotional process, and it’s likely you are feeling a whole range of feelings. Sadness for the end of the marriage, worry for your children, anxiety for your new life, and hopefully a little happiness and relief too. It’s not to shut these feelings away. Feel your emotions and let them breathe. This is a healthy part of moving on.

Focus on your children

If you have children, you are understandably worried about how they will take things. And a divorce can be a traumatic experience for young kids. It’s important you put their wellbeing front and center. No matter what your relationship is like with your ex-partner, you must stay on good terms and both be actively involved in parenting if possible. Never be critical about their other parent and try to keep life as normal as you can.

Make a change

If you are expecting divorced life to be just like it was when you were married, you may be disappointed. But this is an opportunity to make a change and do something really different. Go on a dream holiday by yourself or with your friends. Cut your hair in a new style or buy clothes you wouldn’t normally wear. You can be whoever you want to be.

Get support

No one should ever have to go through a divorce alone. Make sure you rely on your friends and family to offer support and advice. Having loved ones around you will make everything much easier and help you through the difficult times.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
