How to Make the Most of Natural Light in Your Home

April 11, 2024 by Juliann

Your family home is the place where you can relax and make memories. But to be able to do this, your home needs to be a comfortable and practical place for you and your family to live. Nothing beats the feeling of having a home that’s a sanctuary, a place where you can truly be yourself and unwind.

One way to make this happen is by focusing on introducing more natural light into your home. Lighting is an often overlooked but essential element of interior design. You see, making the most of natural light in your home offers many benefits.

Here are just some of the reasons that it’s a good idea to introduce more natural light into your home:

  • Helps to boost your mood and wellbeing.
  • Increases vitamin D levels.
  • Reduces the need for artificial lights.
  • Helps improve sleep.

So, we’ve seen that there are many benefits to be gained from introducing more natural light into your home. But you may be wondering how to make the most of the natural light your home receives. Keep reading for some tips to help you do just that:

Choose Your Window Coverings Carefully

When you want to bring more natural light into your home, it can be hard to know which window coverings to choose. While drapes may be too heavy and block out too much sunlight, blinds are an excellent choice. Choosing blind companies that offer a wide selection of window coverings is the best way to find the right blinds for your home. You don’t want to block out the natural light entirely, but you also don’t want the room to be so bright that the light is unbearable on a sunny day. So, it’s a great idea to discuss your needs with the blind company and they’ll be able to advise you on the right choice of blind.

Pick the Right Color Scheme

Picking a color scheme for your home is always a big decision, so you need to get it right. When maximizing the natural light in your home is your priority, you need to be extra careful with the color scheme you choose. But this doesn’t mean you need to simply stick with completely white walls. This is a common misconception when trying to create a light, bright space in your home. Instead, there are other color options you can try. These include shades of yellow and orange if you want to create a sunny look. Alternatively, you could choose softer tones, such as powder blue and pale pink to make your home feel lighter.

Clear Out the Clutter

One final way to maximize the natural light in your home is to clear out the clutter. Having too much stuff in your home can leave it feeling dark and make it harder to let the natural light in. Keeping surfaces and floor space clear from clutter and organized is a great way to help maximize the natural light your home receives and makes a big difference.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
