Turning 65? Here is How to Plan a Happy Retirement

June 18, 2020 by Juliann

If you are getting closer to 65 you will probably be thinking about your retirement. Being happy and healthy in your senior years will be a priority, and this can be achieved with some forward planning.

This will be a time for you to relax and focus on the things in life that matter to you the most. Transitioning to retirement can be both exciting and daunting as your day-to-day activities can change dramatically. With these simple tips you can prepare for the years ahead and have a happy retirement:

Managing Your Health

Your health is one of the most important things you should consider when entering retirement. If you are a U.S. citizen you will most likely become eligible for Medicare at age 65. Medicare is a federal health insurance program that funds hospital and medical care for older people in the U.S. There is a specific timeline when you should apply, which is during the three months before your 65th birthday, your birthday month, and the three months following. Even if you choose to keep working past age 65, you should apply within that seven month window.

Beyond securing health coverage, do what it takes to manage your health at home. Join a gym, form a walking group with friends or pick up a new, active hobby to stay fit. Also consider other ways you can improve your health and wellness, such as meal preparation for a healthy diet and mental stimulation activities for a healthy mind.

Keeping Your Mind Active

Healthcare and exercise are important, but you should also try to keep your mind active during your retirement. When life is calmer you will have time to read interesting books, do a daily crossword puzzle, or learn a new skill.

Whether it is mastering a computer to connect with your grandchildren, signing up for a class, or participating in quiz nights, using your brain regularly will be beneficial.

Sticking to a Routine

When you are retired the days can start to blur, but having a routine can help to break up the monotony. You could have a weekly coffee date with a friend, or volunteer for a charity. Just because you are retired it doesn’t mean you have to stop everything completely.

There are a number of fitness activities that people over 65 might enjoy. Tennis, hiking groups, gym classes, and walking clubs are just a few popular options.

Making the Most of Your Social Life

Often those over 65 discover they have an active social life! Catching up with family and friends is easier when you have the time, and if you have children you will probably be in high demand.

Don’t be afraid to say “no” to people, as juggling a busy social life can be tiring. However, it is a great time to get out and about and make new friendships, while nurturing existing ones.

Planning a Holiday

As you prepare for your retirement you may like to think about items on your bucket list. Perhaps you have always wanted to go on a road trip or travel to an exotic destination. Whatever you have been putting off, now is the time to make it happen!

Planning a holiday each year will give you something to look forward to. If you are on a budget a few days in a nearby city can be a good excuse to explore the local neighborhood.

A Happy Retirement

Are you almost 65 or planning your retirement? Your senior years can be happy ones when you prioritize your health, maintain friendships, and find meaningful ways to spend your days.

As you get ready for the next stage of life, you can get ready to start ticking items off your bucket list!

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
