A Guide to Becoming the Best Mom Possible

April 3, 2019 by Juliann

When you become a mom, whether it’s for the first time or you’ve had other children before, you want to be perfect. You don’t want to be perfect for yourself, but you do want to be perfect for your child – you know that they deserve the very best and you want to give it to them.

The problem is, no one is perfect, and that includes mothers. We all try, and we try very hard, but sometimes things won’t work out the way we wanted, or we’ll feel disappointed in something we did or said, and then we’ll pile the guilt upon ourselves more and more.

This does nothing but make us less happy and less available for our children. What we need to do is focus on becoming the best mom possible, not the most perfect mom, and here are some ways to do it.

Be A Role Model

One of the best things you can do as a mother is to be a role model for your child. Behave in the way you want them to behave, show them that hard work is something to be proud of, and let them know you are not perfect but that you are trying. This latter is perhaps the most important point; if they understand this, they will be less hard on themselves growing up and will be happier for it.

Being a role model is not about doing everything right; it’s about seeing what has gone wrong and working out a way to fix it. A drug habit is not something you want your children to copy from you, but if you acknowledge the problem and go to Forwardrecovery.com to detox and become well, this is good role model behavior, for example. If you are having trouble finding a job that’s not ideal, but showing your children that you are trying is.

Don’t Compare

Comparing yourself to other moms is never a good idea. What is the point? It will only make you feel worried that you are doing something wrong if you spot another mother feeding their child differently to the way you do it, or dressing their child differently, or behaving differently.

The truth is, since there is no rule book for being a mother, there is no one set way to do it, and everyone will work it out for themselves. Just because you do things one way and someone else does things another that doesn’t mean anyone is wrong.

Take Care Of Yourself

To become the best mom possible, you need to be there for your children no matter how old they are or what they need. To do this, you need to take care of yourself first. That means eating a good, well-balanced diet and exercising regularly, of course.

It also means that you should relax when you can and take time out to do so. Take a long, bubble bath, light some candles, have a spa day, go for a walk, read a book, or listen to music – do what makes you happy and keeps you feeling good, and you can be a better, calmer mom.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
