In celebration of Women’s History Month and just in time for Mother’s Day, I wanted to introduce you to Latia Nelson, the founder of BB Boutique & Co., a self-made woman who pushed through homelessness as a single mother while going to school to start her own company. Latia’s inspirational story is below.
I always knew I wanted to be a mom one day and raise loving, kind, compassionate human
beings who would make a difference in this world. Thirteen years ago, God made me a boy
mom, and it’s been quite the adventure. As a mom of two young sons, I understand firsthand
just how beautiful yet trying motherhood can be—especially as a working mama. There have
been, and still are, days when I’m tired, burnt out, and stressed from running businesses all day,
only to come home to break up sibling rivalries and repeatedly remind my sons to do their
chores and homework.

Each year, like clockwork, my boys always ask me what I want for Mother’s Day. My answer is
usually good kids and a clean house. While that’s my usual gift from them, over the years, I
have allowed myself to celebrate me on Mother’s Day. My gift to myself includes intentional
self-care rituals and doing things that make me smile.
Most may not realize that Mother’s Day is simply more than just a Hallmark card and flowers. It’s
a celebration of the ultimate creators of life. If everyone else around you can celebrate you, why
can’t you celebrate yourself? Here are some of the ways I celebrate myself and my life-creating
abilities each year.
I get dressed up the morning of Mother’s Day
I start my morning looking good to feel good on my special day. I wear my best outfit, the one
that makes me feel gorgeous, and do my makeup to feel glamorous. It doesn’t matter if I’m staying in all day or going out—I feel radiant inside and out.
I intentionally spoil myself
Whether it’s a cupcake, flowers, or a manicure, I make sure to gift myself with intention, as an
act of self-love and appreciation.
I allow myself some alone time
For me, this happens when my boys are in school. I do whatever brings me the most joy in this
time. Sometimes, it’s absolutely nothing but solitude. It just allows me to slow down and enjoy
the most luxurious asset we all have—time.
At the end of the day, I shower and light my favorite BB Boutique & Co.
candle before bed
I’m very intentional with the products I create, and I use them as I envisioned my customers
would. I designed my niche home fragrance and beauty products to uplift moods by enhancing
the self-care experience. From product to packaging, I’ve always wanted my customers to feel
like the best version of themselves. When I light my favorite Unapologetic candle while reading
my favorite book before bed, I feel so grounded and happy.
For those just getting to know me, my brand, BB Boutique & Co., was founded on principles of
self-care and inspired by my journey to womanhood—from the young 23-year-old single mother
I was when I started the brand to the woman I am today. Moments of peace and beauty are
reflected in the multi-sensory and olfactory experiences we provide that uplifts moods and allow
our consumers to connect with themselves in a positive and meaningful way.
When I think of celebrating Mother’s Day, these experiences come to mind. By creating self-care
rituals and declaring the day as mine, I put myself first and revel in the joys of
motherhood—because I deserve to. You should do the same.
