What Attracts Them?
Female mosquitoes are generally attracted to blood as it contains the protein and iron they need for their eggs. Male mosquitoes won’t bite you! It is worth noting that mosquitoes can detect the carbon dioxide you breathe out from at least 15 meters away, they can also sense the blood in your veins, allowing them to pick the right spot to bite.
But, while you may think your blood is what attracts them, the reason they choose one person over another is based on the following:
- Clothing
Mosquitoes prefer dark and bold colors. If you stick to lighter colors they are less likely to head for you. In addition, you should note that they can bite through tight clothing, loose-fitting clothing is a better idea.
- Smell
Mosquitoes prefer floral scents, perhaps because it reminds them of the flowers in the area. If you use flower-scented lotions and soaps the mosquitoes are more likely to head to you and bite you.
Surprisingly, they are also attracted to smelly feet and the associated skin odor. They can pick up on these scents from a distance and use them to find you.
- Food
It is also worth considering what you eat. Sweeter foods and beer are particularly good at attracting mosquitoes. That’s something to think about next time you are ordering or preparing food.
- Warm Body
All humans have warm bodies but if your temperature is slightly elevated over your friends you will find the mosquitoes are more attracted to you. Research also suggests that your genetics will play a part in whether mosquitoes will be attracted to you or not.
Avoiding Mosquitoes
The best way to avoid mosquitoes is to stay covered up in areas where they are likely to be located. This should be loose clothing that covers all of your body. Don’t forget, mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, the heat of the day s too much for them.
They are also poor flyers, sitting near a fan can help make it difficult for the mosquitoes to get to you.
Alongside this, there are plenty of mosquito repellants on the market that you can use which have been shown to be effective.
