How Autistic Children Can Benefit From Sensory Toys?

July 13, 2022 by Juliann

Living with autistic disorders is not easy for anyone, and more so if the individuals are children. This disorder has an adverse impact on a person’s mental, social and physical health to a great extent. The complexities associated with autism disorder can range from mild to severe, but the implications of these disabilities are far beyond anything a blessed person can imagine.

While one cannot entirely change the affected individual’s life, there are always ways to make things better for them. But what are those ways? Among many other alternatives, sensory toys are certainly at the top of the list. So, continue reading to learn more about ways sensory toys can benefit children with autism disorder.

But First, What Exactly Are Sensory Toys?

Any object or material that can help a child enhance their sensory responses can be defined as sensory toys. The senses involved here include sound, sight, touch, and more. Thus, a sensory toy can be anything from sandpaper used for rubbing against the skin to a squeeze ball.

Research shows children with autism spectrum disorder are very likely to experience increased sensitivity to their environments. This is where sensory toys come as an excellent savior as it facilitates stimulation from either one or the other senses. This helps one work on senses that can benefit from some external efforts.

What Makes Sensory Toys Important for Autistic Children?

People have used sensory toys for many years, as there are many benefits to using them. For starters, children with autism can gain better sensitivity to sound, touch, sight, and more. Sensory processing disorder is a common condition among children with autism. The less known fact about these disorders is their adverse impact on restricting people from interacting with their everyday objects.

These children also have increased sensitivity to specific textures in foods, clothes, and other similar items. Some studies verify children with autism suffer from at least one sensory disorder. This makes it imperative for those children to receive intervention to treat such symptoms at the earliest.

The earlier one intervenes with the treatment for these symptoms, the better the overall results one can expect from these treatments. Many experts recommend autistic children undergo sensory therapy for at least thirty to forty minutes every day. However, make sure you find the right therapist for such treatment to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment.

Toys Such as Fidget Toys are Great for People of All Ages

Children of all ages enjoy playing with fidget toys to a great extent. But it is children with autism disorder who can enjoy the immense benefit from the use of these toys. The reason behind this is simple: these toys are ideal for keeping the brain focused and occupied on a specific thing. As a result, it becomes easier for these children to be more attentive and calmer, allowing them to study much more effectively.

One can even get chewable toys for children who have autism and a habit of chewing pencils or shirts. This will help them get rid of these habits and instead chew on the toys that fit right into their mouth.

But when you set out to buy fidget toys for any autistic child, you need to be mindful of their specific requirements. Every child is unique in their own way, so the toy you get them must cater to their requirements. In case of confusion, you should seek advice from doctors and specialists to get the right toys for the child.

What Should One Look for In Fidget Toys?

The basic qualities you need to ensure when buying fidget toys are ensuring they are made of soft materials and feature bring colors. Other than that, you can also focus on getting toys with textures that interest the children. Also, make sure to get toys that make noise, as they are more effective in enhancing the sensory responses of the children.

Some of the most common sensory toys autistic children enjoy playing with include stuffed animals, squeeze balls, textured blocks, and more such toys. You can start with these toys and gradually work your way up to more significant toys such as trampolines and balance beams. But no matter the toy you buy, make sure to keep the child’s specific requirements in mind.

Feel free to ask experts, doctors, and, most importantly, the parents of the children. No matter what, you cannot undermine the fact that parents will know their children’s preferences better than anyone else would. This is the most effective way to ensure you get the right sensory toys for the children, which actually positively impact their sensory health.

What Type of Sensory Toys Should One Buy For Autistic Children?

There are many different types of sensory and autistic toys available on the market. As a result, it becomes very challenging to find the right type of sensory toy. Nonetheless, here are a couple of options to choose from.

  • Fidget Spinners: Fidget spinners have been the epitome of fidget toys in the past couple of years. These toys help one enhance any individual’s attention and balancing capabilities and even more so if the person has autism. Besides, fidget spinners come in many bright colors, which further aid in enhancing the attentive capabilities of children.
  • Pop It Toys: Many children enjoy playing with squishy and squeezable toys. Pop-it toys are ideal for these children as they allow them to hold the toy in their hands and get a better grip. As a result, it helps facilitate a calming sensation among children, irrespective of their age.
  • DNA Stress Ball: DNA Stress balls are not just ideal for children but even for adults who deal with increased stress. Besides, these balls come in many bright colors, making them ideal for stimulating sensory responses among autistic children.

Final Thoughts

Autistic children are not very different from conventional children, but the little difference can alter their lives significantly. So, it is highly recommended you do the little you can to help make their lives a little easier. As you can see, sensory toys are the ideal things you need to achieve such a goal.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
