How Does Technology Help and Hinder Our Children?

December 6, 2021 by Juliann

There’s no doubt that technology has become an integral part of our modern lives. Many of the daily tasks and business operations are made simple because of it, and it’s also shown to be an effective tool in the modern day classroom. Because most of what we do today is centered around technology, the question arises: How much technology is too much? And if you’re a parent, you may also be asking questions such as: Does technology help or hinder my children?

The truth is, children these days are mastering technology faster than ever. While screen time can be fun and educational, there’s certainly a point when it starts doing more harm than good. In this article, we’ll be exploring the pros and cons of technology, the effects it has on our children, and all the different ways parents can boost the positive aspects of it.

It’s an excellent tool for facilitating learning

Nowadays, you’ll find a multitude of schools that are making technology a basic component of their classroom and curriculum. Teachers are posting assignments online, sending messages using emails, and students can easily access copies of textbooks online. Some pre-schools even rely on iPads to help facilitate learning.

All this contributes to making learning easier and more convenient. With information at their fingertips, kids can easily browse and research virtually any topic that comes to mind. And according to one study, the correct use of technology can even result in increased IQ in children.

…but it could lead to reduced attention span

There’s no doubt that increased stimuli can be a great mental exercise for improving children’s learning skills. That said, exposing a child to excessive stimuli could do more harm than good.

Whether we’re talking about tablets, computers, or smartphones, the constant presence of technological devices in a child’s daily routine could reduce their attention span. This, in turn, can lead to concentration difficulties, which could potentially harm their academic performance. Therefore, supervising and managing the use of technology is an essential step every parent needs to take.

It’s ideal for helping children develop certain skills

Living in the digital era makes it quite easy to trigger kids’ interest in certain subjects and skills. It also makes it easy for your child to pursue and further develop the skills they’re interested in.

For instance, a child who’s decided to learn how to play tennis can greatly benefit from free tennis instructional videos that are available online. They can pick up some useful tips while also getting insight from expert coaches. With so many programs and tools, parents can support their children’s interests, whether that’s coding, technical drawing, or virtual design.

….but it can stagnate physical activity

The Internet can be a great place for parents to head to when they want to support their kids’ interests. The problem arises when too much screen time becomes the norm, so much so that it stagnates physical activity.

Various studies highlight the link between increased technology use and reduced physical activity. To make matters worse, increased screen time is often accompanied by snacks, which could lead to weight gain over time. Balancing quantity and quality of screen time is an important step in combating childhood obesity rates, which are constantly rising.

It can help you keep your child safe

While exploring the Internet does bring a multitude of advantages, the truth is, it’s not always the safest of places. That said, dangers could be lurking around every corner IRL as well.

The good thing about technology is that it offers us a variety of tools that can help parents protect their children and manage their whereabouts more easily. From content filtering tools to mobile monitoring apps, with technological advancements, keeping your child safe and secure is easier than ever – whether on the internet or the street.

…yet it can turn into a bad habit

With so many positive sides, it may be easy for parents to disregard the negative aspects of screen media use. Still, technology use, when not managed efficiently, could turn into a bad habit, leading to social, health, and psychological consequences.

With consumption of screen media among children at an all-time high, it’s important for parents to curb this unhealthy habit. By managing the quantity and quality of the digital media that your little one consumes, you can establish healthy boundaries. In doing so, you can help your child make the most of their screen time.

Wrapping up

There’s no denying that developing aptitude for technology is essential for keeping up with the increasingly digital world. Still, it’s important to be aware of the possible negative consequences of technology, even more so if you’re a parent.

In doing so, you can manage to maximize the positive effects of using technology while simultaneously minimizing negative ones.

Welcome to Beautiful Moms

Hi! I’m Juliann, a wife to my wonderful husband, Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I first started Beautiful Moms Blog in 2008, my goal was to connect with and support other moms who were in the thick of raising young children. It became a creative outlet where I could share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with companies that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It’s so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. I have always believed that every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she’s in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms Blog has grown and evolved right along with me. Today, my children are adults, and I have embraced the blessings of being a grandma. My passion for encouraging women hasn’t changed—it has simply expanded to include every season of motherhood, from pregnancy and the newborn years to raising teenagers, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

I’m excited to have my daughter, Myelie, as a contributor to Beautiful Moms. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood. She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a home wherever life takes you.

Together, we’re here to support women through every age and stage of motherhood—from pregnancy to menopause—with helpful advice, honest product recommendations, beauty and wellness tips, and plenty of encouragement along the way.

We are PR Friendly and love working with great companies!
