How Dogs Support Human Health and Well-Being

December 8, 2022 by Juliann Leave a Comment

Even though it is a cliché, the saying “dogs are man’s best friend” is simply accurate. Everyone loves dogs and people who have a dog or two certainly can feel a lot of benefits these furry friends bring. There is even a lot of research saying that dog owners experience great self-esteem, are more extroverted, and tend to be less fearful, among other things. What’s more, we are familiar with all those therapy dogs that are making our lives simply easier and safer. So, if you are still wondering if you should get a dog, here are a few examples of how dogs support our well-being.

They Lower Our Stress

No one can stay cold-hearted or mad when they are welcomed to their home by their happy dog wagging its tail. Studies have shown that owning and petting a dog can greatly reduce stress in our lives. This is due to the oxytocin hormone being produced and cortisol (stress hormone) being reduced when petting your dog. As a result, a person is in a more relaxed state, completely forgetting about stress. In the past several years, dogs have been introduced to many institutions, including nursing homes, school campuses, and airports to help people feel less stressed and pressured.

They Bring Us an Active Lifestyle

You already know that dogs do love to run and go for walks. Thus, owning a dog is a perfect way to push yourself to lead a more active lifestyle. No matter if you want to drop a few pounds or simply spend more time outside, the dog’s got your back! Various studies have shown that dog owners who walk their dogs regularly have shown the effects of regular exercise. There is a strong link between walking a dog and achieving higher levels of physical activity and that is one of the biggest benefits your pet can bring you.

However, people are often scared that their dogs will run away or get lost if they let them run themselves out. However, the tech industry has been thinking about dog owners’ and dogs’ safety, and today you can easily rely on pet locator tags to always know where they are. Simply put it on, connect it to your phone and enjoy spending time outside with your dog without a worry in mind.

They Help Eliminate Loneliness

It is a fact that people tend to get lonely. This can happen for a number of reasons, but owning a dog can help reduce those feelings of loneliness. Owning a dog is an obligation and you always have to take care of it, feed it, and take it for walks. Dogs also seek your attention and are always there for you. Additionally, people with dogs tend to feel less dissatisfied with their emotional, physical, and social state. And on top of that, there is even research that shows that homesick college students often benefit from therapy dogs.

Dogs Keep Our Hearts Healthy

As mentioned before, dogs keep us active. You have to go for walks and constantly figure out ways to provide more time outside. And with more physical activity, the healthier your heart is. Additionally, since dogs can lower our stress, it goes without saying that they can help us lower our blood pressure. This also keeps the strain off of your heart, making you healthier. According to a study from 2002, people with dogs reported lower blood pressure and heart rates than people without any pets. Not only that, but people who are heart attack survivors and who own pets are more likely to live a bit longer.

They Can Help with Allergies

According to the Department of Pediatrics, babies in homes with dogs are less likely to develop any allergies. Kids who grow up with pets, especially dogs, have much lower chances of having allergic dermatitis and wheezing. What’s more, there is some research that is looking into whether the bacteria in dogs’ mouths could actually have a probiotic-like effect on humans.

It goes without saying that we don’t deserve dogs. They love us unconditionally and truly can bring joy and wonder into our lives. What’s more, there is tons of research that supports the claim that dogs simply make us healthier and happier. They keep us active, lower our stress and keep our hearts healthy. Plus, they bring us joy and make us feel less lonely. So, if you are considering getting a companion, don’t overlook dogs. Visit the local shelter and get a puppy to share your life with.
