How to Care for Permed Hair: Basic Recommendations

November 22, 2021 by Juliann Leave a Comment

Many people dream of tight curls that are obtained after perming hair. However, it is a rather traumatic procedure, like any long-term treatment, after which the locks require special gentle care. Therefore, this issue should be studied in advance. In this article, you will find out which problems you might face, how to care for treated curls, and how to choose masks, balms, and shampoos for permed hair.

Perm Possible Consequences

This way of treating locks is attractive because little effort is required on your part. One procedure is enough to keep playful curls for several months. No more daily styling is required. However, such a method also has disadvantages:

  • after using aggressive chemicals, strands might become dry and brittle;
  • hair follicles become brittle as well, which increases hair loss;
  • the hair ends might begin to split even more severely than usual;
  • the color might become dull;
  • perm can provoke dandruff.

If your hairdresser picks the wrong chemical mix, you will definitely feel these negative consequences. Apart from choosing a professional, you should also take a responsible approach to hair care after treatment. It will help you minimize any drawbacks and keep your curls healthy.

Hair Washing

All experts recommend not shampooing your hair for at least a day after treatment. It is necessary to stabilize the chemical reaction and consolidate the result. When choosing a shampoo, opt for products explicitly designed for permed hair. It is essential that the purchased item takes care of your dry curls and nourishes them with useful substances. Plus, shampoos for permed hair help curls to form. It is desirable that they contain shea butter and argan oil.

In addition to regularly washing your hair with the right products, you should give the strands extra nutrition in the form of masks. You can increase their use up to 3-4 times a week.

Drying and Brushing

First of all, you should ensure that your usual drying and styling methods do not harm your already damaged curls. Professionals recommend that you completely abandon blow-drying your locks in favor of natural drying so as not to expose them to additional stress. If it is impossible, use high-quality thermal protection products, choose a low-temperature mode, do not dry the strands completely, let them remain slightly damp.

Also, along with the change of shampoo, you will have to replace your brush. It is recommended to buy a wide-toothed comb that will easily unravel tangled strands. You can use a special softening spray to make this procedure easier.

Styling

As experienced masters say, the process of forming curls continues for two weeks after the treatment. Therefore, during this period, you should be especially careful with your hair. Never try to straighten them with a flat iron or hairdryer and brush. It will cause irreparable damage to the strands.

Also, do not overuse styling products like mousses and gels. But if you still want to use them, choose the right items:

  • they should be specially designed for curly hair;
  • they should structure the curls well;
  • curls are more visible and elastic after you use them.

After applying these products, use a hairdryer with a diffuser attachment, which disperses the air stream and does not break the strands.

Take Proper Care of Your Permed Hair

Although perm is a pretty traumatic procedure for locks, it is in your power to minimize all possible negative consequences. Use the right shampoos, conditioners, and masks, protect your hair from the sun, and avoid exposing it to mechanical stress. Please share your experience in caring for permed strands in the comments.
