How To Help My Teenager After Their First Car Accident?

March 27, 2023 by Juliann Leave a Comment

Teenage drivers are extremely excited to start driving, however their lack of experience and unpredictable drivers on the road can lead to accidents.

While your teenager might be traumatized and frightened after a car accident, you must be supportive for them during this difficult time.  In this blog post, we will discuss some tips on how to help your teenager after their first car accident.

Ensure Their Safety

First and foremost, make sure that your teenager is safe.  If the accident occurred on a busy road like a freeway, move the car to a safe area and turn on the hazard lights.  Once your teen is out of harm’s way, check if they need immediate medical attention.

Call Emergency Services

Once your teenager is safe, call 911 immediately and report the car accident.  You will receive medical attention and have the ability to file a police report.

Whether your teenager was involved in a minor or severe accident, you should always file a police report.  This can help you with insurance claims and the legal process.

Call Your Insurance Company

After you file a police report and call for emergency services if necessary, report the accident to your insurance company.  They can guide you through the process of reporting the car accident and explain the next steps you must take.

Be Calm and Give Them Reassurance

Your teenager might be scared and not sure about the next steps they must take. You must remain calm and provide them support.  Assure them that accidents happen to everyone and that everything will be okay.

Make sure that they know you will help them through every step of the process. This can help alleviate any feelings of guilt they may be experiencing.

Additionally, listen to their concerns and empathize with their feelings.  You can provide a safe space for them when you allow them to express their feelings about the car accident.

Gather Evidence of The Car Accident

The Coral Springs accident attorneys from the Law Office of Andrew G. Rosenberg P.A. recommend that you gather as much evidence as possible from your car accident.  Your evidence can prove and support your damages claim.  Additionally, the attorneys explain that there are five different types of evidence:

  • Accident Reconstruction:  Sometimes there are no eyewitnesses to testify about the cause of the car accident, therefore a forensic expert will utilize evidence such as patterns, collision angle, and black box data to recreate the accident and potentially provide an explanation.
  • Incriminating Statements: Although negligent drivers will not admit fault, they could make incriminating comments that can be used against them in court.
  • Violations: The police could issue a citation or arrest the negligent driver for breaking laws during the car accident.  It would be beneficial for you to obtain a copy of these reports during your legal proceedings.
  • Eyewitnesses: An innocent bystander might have witnessed the accident occur and their statement can hold the negligent driver accountable.
  • Media: Take photos and obtain any video evidence of the car accident.  Any media you have can help you prove that the other driver was negligent.

As a parent to a teenager that was involved in a car accident, you must ensure their safety, seek medical attention if necessary, file a police report, and contact your insurance company. Additionally, you can help alleviate your teenager’s feelings of anxiety or stress by giving them reassurance.

Lastly, it is crucial that you gather evidence from the car accident to help prove fault in the legal process.  By following these tips, you can help navigate your teenager through the aftermath of their first car accident.
