How To Lose Baby Weight After Giving Birth

February 16, 2021 by Juliann

During pregnancy, it can be easy to gain a few lbs. You are, after all, nurturing and growing a baby. However, once you have your baby, in the months that pass, it can be hard to lose that weight. If you are wanting to lose some weight but are struggling, it can get you down. To start on the right track with losing weight (and keeping it off), you need to decide what your target weight is. What weight would you ultimately like to reach?

What Is Your End Goal

Once you have a goal weight in mind, you next need to work out a timeframe. When do you want to lose the weight for? Is it for that wedding next year, or is it for that much-needed Maui family resorts vacation? If you have a timescale to work to, it will keep you dedicated and focused. Now that you have set a date for reaching your goal weight, you need to break it down.

Breaking It Down

Make smaller and shorter targets to keep you on track to reaching that end goal. For example, if you want to lose 40 lbs within 6 months, then work on losing a few lbs a month. Breaking goals down and giving yourself targets will ensure that you don’t just lose weight, but that you keep it off, and that you do so in a healthy way.

Healthy Eating

To lose weight, you are going to need to cut down your portion sizes and adopt a healthier diet. This might sound drastic, but it doesn’t need to be. Dieting doesn’t mean you can’t have any nice food; it just means everything in moderation – you can still have little treats here and there.

Mind-set

As a new mum, you have to give yourself time to lose weight. Your body is not the same as it was pre-pregnancy, and you need to accept this. To lose weight, you need to have a strong mindset, and you need to be motivated. With small babies, time is not on your side, especially if you are nursing, so, you need to make sure you get a little bit of time for yourself in the day, just to refocus your efforts. When you are short on time, it can be very easy to fall into that trap of just eating junk food that’s quick to prepare.

Exercise

Just as diet is important, so too is exercise. The type of exercise you do will depend on how much time you have free within a day. The most important thing is that you give yourself time to exercise. Cutting down your calorie intake is one thing, but you also need to burn off excess calories that you have been building up, and the only way to do this is to exercise. Try not to push yourself too hard when it comes to exercising as your body has been through the trauma of giving birth (which it can take up to a year) for your body to return to normal, so always keep this in mind.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
