How to Protect Your Home from Emergencies

January 14, 2021 by Juliann

The home should be safe for your family, but this will not come naturally as there are many threats to safety in the home you need to be aware of. Fire, flood, property damage, and crime are all issues that need to be taken very seriously as a homeowner and, when you know how to do this, you can protect your family and your home while benefiting from peace of mind. So, how can you go about protecting your home from an emergency? There are a few key areas that you should focus on, so read on to find out all you need to know.

Fire Safety

Fire is one of the greatest threats to households and one which needs to be taken very seriously. You must have smoke detectors throughout the home and a carbon monoxide detector and check the batteries regularly, plus you should also have a fire extinguisher. Taking care while cooking is important, but you should also discuss a fire safety plan for your family in case of an emergency.

Home Security

It is unfortunate, but criminals will target homes, and you will want to do all that you can to safeguard your home from theft as this can be extremely traumatic. There are lots of excellent ways that you can do this, including:

  • Intruder alarm
  • CCTV cameras
  • Smart locks
  • Video doorbell
  • Keycode gate
  • Exterior lighting
  • Door locks tested against various lock picking tools

Plumbing

Every home need working plumbing, but things can go wrong, leading to significant damage to the home. The best way to prevent issues relating to plumbing is to find experienced plumbers in your area, such as Waxahachie plumbers for those in Texas, who can provide regular maintenance as well as emergency repairs if you encounter an issue such as a burst pipe or broken plumbing parts, which could lead to water damage and mold.

Household Maintenance

Homeowners should also be performing regular household maintenance to protect their property and avoid damage, which could both be costly and unsafe. This will include inspecting the roof twice a year, clearing the gutters, having the boiler serviced annually, unclogging drains, and performing regular deep cleans.

Insurance

It would be best if you had sufficient household insurance in place. Sometimes, an emergency will take place despite your best efforts, and having insurance in place will provide financial protection and peace of mind. While this will not prevent or reverse an emergency, it can prevent further hardship and suffering and help you recover from the emergency much faster. It is a good idea to check your home and contents insurance annually and keep an inventory of your home items.

These are the areas you need to focus on to prevent emergencies in the home and protect your house, possessions, and family. There are many threats to the home, but when you know what these are and what actions need to be taken, you can create a safe home for your family.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
