How to Share the Parenting Load With Your Partner

June 29, 2022 by Juliann

Parenting looks completely different before you experience it. Then a lot of things seem easier than they actually are. However, when you become a parent, you realize how many responsibilities you actually get.

Responsibilities and parenting load can be easier if you have someone to share it with. Parenting is a beautiful thing; it just needs to be approached the right way.

If you want to learn how to share a parenting load with your partner, keep reading.

Your skills and passions

If you want to function well and get your children on the right path, you need to talk to your partner about sharing responsibilities. This conversation should include discussing the skills and passions of both partners. This will make it easier for you to share responsibilities according to what you like to do and what you do well.

Therefore, parenting responsibilities will not be difficult, and you will enjoy doing them. In such a way, you will use your skills, and at the same time enjoy what you are doing while taking care of your children.

Most people have a picture of a family in which the father is in charge of money management, while the mother is in charge of cooking. Let’s overcome these kinds of prejudices. You should talk openly with your partner in order to distribute the obligations evenly according to the skills and things that both partners enjoy.

For example, a parent has good skills in solving math problems and enjoys doing so. That means that parents will take responsibility for helping kids with homework. On the other hand, the other partner is a good cook and enjoys preparing various specialties. It means that person will be more than happy to prepare meals for children.

Consider parenting consultations

If you feel that you and your partner are unable to agree on a division of responsibilities and parenting load, consider a parent consultation.

In such a way, with the help of professionals, you will be able to overcome these problems. So, you will have the opportunity to tell your side of the story, hear your partner’s, and also get parenting advice from an expert. These consultations will help you to reach an agreement with your partner on sharing the parenting load.

If you are too busy and unable to attend the sessions in person, don’t worry parenting consultations are also offered online.

Your schedules

It is really crucial that you discuss your obligations with your partner. That way you will be able to make a schedule, so you know when you are free and when you are not.

Once both partners have done so, you will be able to agree on the sharing of parenting responsibilities and loads. If the work of one of the partners requires a greater absence from home, that partner can take on some other responsibilities. Doing so will be easier for the one who mostly takes care of the children.

It is very important that you dedicate your free time to your children in order to teach them the right values and prepare them for what awaits them in life. It is also crucial to balance your free time, and therefore be able to do different things including taking care of your children, doing household chores, etc.

Help your partner

The key thing in good parenting is a mutual understanding of both partners. If you know your partner well, therefore you will feel when they need help.

Maybe your partner is under pressure from business commitments and child care or is simply in a difficult period of life for various reasons. In these situations, you need to ask yourself what you can do to reduce their loads, or what will help them be better parents to your children.

It is very important that you help your partner because in that way you will also help in creating a good living environment for your children. If one parent is constantly under pressure, the children will also suffer, and this will negatively affect them.

Wrapping up

Talking to a partner is the key to solving all problems. When it comes to sharing partner responsibilities and parenting loads, it is important that both partners are willing to make different sacrifices for the benefit of their children. It is important that you have the will and desire to share parenting responsibilities equally, as well as to be ready to help your partner if necessary. If you realize that your conversations are not going well and that you are unable to reach a compromise, seek professional help.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
