How to Stay Fit and Healthy in Your Twilight Years

As you age, both your mind and body will undergo a number of changes, some of which will be positive and, unfortunately, some which will be negative. Enhanced wisdom is definitely a positive thing to come out of the aging process, as this will allow you to make sounder life decisions and provide better advice to the younger members of your family. A big negative that you will be forced to face in your twilight years, on the other hand, is the fact that you will gradually find it harder and harder to remain fit and healthy. Rest assured, however, that this is not necessarily an impossible task to undertake. If you put your mind to it and work hard enough, you can stay healthy and retain a relatively high level of fitness no matter what year you were born in!

To find out how you can stay fit and healthy in your twilight years, be sure to put the following healthy aging tips into practice.

Know what challenges you face

Being aware of the health challenges that you are liable to face as you age will make the task of staying fit and healthy much easier. One particular eye-related challenge that you will be likely to face is presbyopia. What is presbyopia? This is a refractive error that makes it difficult for a person to see objects that are close up. This is a common plight that most people between the ages of 40 and 60 will face at some point or another as they age.

If you suffer from any of the following symptoms, you should go and see an eye care professional right away:

  • Blurred vision whenever you are looking at objects that are only an arm’s length away
  • Squinting constantly
  • Eye fatigue towards the end of each day
  • Suffering from headaches more often
  • Trouble reading
  • Having to zoom in on digital text more often
  • Remain active

    Remaining active is the best thing you can do to increase and maintain your fitness levels as you age. As soon as you slow down in this instance, you’ll slowly but surely find it more and more challenging to exercise. Should this ever happen, both your physical health and your mental health will be in danger of deteriorating over time.

    Of course, you are no longer going to be able to engage in bouts of strenuous physical activity. There are, however, a host of things that you can do to push yourself to the limit without hurting yourself. Some of these exercise regimes include:

  • Water aerobics
  • Dance classes
  • Lifting hand weights
  • Balance activities
  • Yoga
  • Pilates
  • Gardening
  • Brisk walking
  • Climbing stairs
  • Working out with resistance bands
  • You might not be a spring chicken anymore, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t get and stay fit in your old age. By knowing what challenges you are likely to face and resolving to remain active for as long as you possibly can, your twilight years could very well prove to be the fittest, healthiest, and happiest years of your life.
