Keep Your Child Busy this Summer with The Happy Trunk (Review and Giveaway)

August 12, 2014 by Juliann Leave a Comment

It isn’t always easy to keep the little ones entertained when the weather is too hot to go outside. (Or in my case, today, there is thunder and lightening!) If you are like me, you don’t want to be using video games as a babysitter. (Although I admit is does come in handy sometimes.)

I am not one of those moms who has an easy time coming up with creative ways to keep my son, Braxton from getting bored, so I was incredibly excited to get the chance to review The Happy Trunk. The Happy Trunk is a monthly subscription box full of hands on art, craft and science activities for kids in two age groups: 3-7, and 8-11. All materials and know instructions are included.

“At the Happy Trunk, we want to share our love for arts and crafts and DIY science experiments that we do with our kids. Hands on learning experiences not only enrich our children’s minds and self confidence, they create special moments for the whole family engaging together in creativity.

The Happy Trunk is a family of parents, educators, and crafters bringing in real life experiences and craft and science projects that we love doing with our kids! We hope to inspire and encourage creativity in children through hands on activities.
We chose our company name as ‘The Happy Trunk’, as we hope the projects and activities engage kids meaningfully, and bring a smile to their faces, while doing these projects as well as later. Most of these activities can be used thereafter for more imaginative and role play activities.

My Thoughts: I was sent The Happy Trunk to review. I chose the 8-11 age group, even though my son has another month to go before he turns 8. It came at a perfect time because we had a couple of rainy days this summer and Braxton and I were getting stir crazy. Our box included An LED conductor, a paper mache kit to make a lantern and a kit to make a fun mask!
Braxton had never done paper mache before, so I helped him tear up the pieces of tissue paper (that were included in the kit.) We blew up the balloon, and I got the messy mixture ready by just adding water. (After covering up our work space with old newspapers.) Braxton had a great time digging his hands into the goop and spreading it and the soaked tissue paper all over the balloon to create his lantern.

Braxton also had fun creating his paper mache mask. This kit included a plastic mask and gauze that was covered in a dry substance that activated into paper mache when you dipped it in water. I had to help Braxton quite a bit with this too get the gauze nice and smooth onto the mask without any bumps. It took a day for it to dry before we could paint it, but it was fun!

I don’t have any pictures of the final projects, but they were sure a heck of a lot of fun to do together, and they kept my boy busy as well as gave us a great bonding experience. (Plus, I got a refresher course on being more patient.) As for the LED conductor kit, I haven’t tried that yet, but it looks like a fun little science experiment that Braxton could even take to school for show-an- tell in the fall.
Win! One winner will receive a Happy Trunk activity box (in the age range of their choice) as well as a Familia activity kit. (ARV: $49.99)
