While some people decide to stop learning from the moment they step out of their school gates or university campus for the last time, there are plenty who decide that they should continue learning for life. Whether you are currently in the latter camp or not, there are plenty of direct advantages to being there, and we are going to discuss some of them in the following blog post. If you have not learnt anything in a while, this could prove to be a nudge in the right direction. If you are already on a lifelong learning path, this could prove to be confirmation that you are on the right track!
Boost Your Self-Confidence
Lots of people feel like they need a boost of self-confidence in their lives for various reasons, but they often try to find it in the wrong places – perhaps through an over-reliance on inhibition-lowering substances like alcohol. However, learning can give you plenty of confidence as well. You naturally make yourself more interesting and feel like you can engage with all sorts of different people. When you put yourself forward for a job interview, you automatically feel more confident that you have a lot to say about yourself. Another example of boosted confidence is that if you go to visit a foreign country, you will feel much more comfortable if you are able to speak some of their language.
Battle Against Boredom
If you find yourself becoming bored for any reason, one of the best ways of tackling this is by learning some new skills or taking in some knowledge. There are plenty of different methods of learning, so you can pick the ones that you find the most interesting. For example, you have the more structured courses such as California RCFE administration certification. However, if you don’t enjoy this style of taking information, you can also do things like read books, listen to podcasts, or watch documentary films. With so much knowledge in the world, there is no need to ever be bored!
Keep Your Mind Sharp
People are living longer than ever before, and it is important that you take the steps needed to keep your mind as sharp and active as possible. Learning is one of the best ways of keeping your brain functioning at a high level. As you get older, there is more of a risk of developing degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, but keeping an active mind is one of the best ways of fighting back against this. As we have mentioned in the previous section, there are plenty of different ways of keeping your mind sharp, so you can choose what works best for you.
Make Yourself More Employable
We live in a world that is highly competitive, and it is all too easy to find yourself being overtaken in the job market by your peers and people coming through in the next generation. Therefore, it is worthwhile to take all the steps that you can to make yourself as employable as possible. No matter what skills you learn, you can make yourself more attractive to employers. Simply demonstrating that you have an active interest in the world can go a long way – even if the skills that you learn are not directly related to the job role. Ultimately, if you develop enough skills and knowledge, you will find yourself in the nice position of being selective of what you can put on your resume – and you can tailor it to get all sorts of different jobs as a result!
Develop Practical Life Skills
While some of the things that you learn are only theoretical, there are plenty of skills that you can pick up that have more practical benefits in your life. For example, if you learn some DIY skills, you can use them around the home, offer your services to friends and neighbors who need them, or even open up a little business on the side. The more practical skills you pick up in life, the more doors that you will find opening up to you. Of course, learning requires a great deal of patience and commitment, and there are no short-term fixes. However, if you are willing to put in the effort now, the rewards are ready and waiting to be reaped.
Pass on Your Knowledge and Skills to Others
Another natural benefit of lifelong learning is that you will have the opportunity to pass on your knowledge and skills to those around you. Perhaps you decide to do this for free as a way of helping out your local community and making the world around you just a little bit better. For example, you could offer a tutoring service to a schoolchild who is struggling with their subject. Alternatively, you may decide to charge for your services and set up a business on the side. With online learning becoming so popular these days, especially due to the events of 2020, there is plenty of opportunities to set up this particular business and make it work around the rest of your life.
Create a Positive Example for Your Children
When you are a parent, you are always looking for ways that you can be a positive example to your children and provide them with footsteps that they can follow in. If your kids see your commitment to lifelong learning, they are more likely to replicate your dedication in their own lives. When kids are young, they are like sponges and are highly influenced by the adults in their life. Working hard to achieve certain goals is always going to be a worthwhile example to set.
Discover New Interests
When you are making a commitment to lifelong learning, it is always worthwhile making it as broad as possible. This way, you can discover new interests that you never knew you had before. Many people tend to be quite fixed in their ways and unwilling to step out of their comfort zones. However, when you open yourself to new interests, you never know what could prove to become a new passion project of yours. So, if you are bored of always learning the same thing all the time, it is worth expanding your sphere of learning and trying something entirely different. You never know how much you might enjoy it!
Set and Achieve Goals
When you are learning something, you automatically set yourself certain goals of what you want to achieve. There is an enormous sense of satisfaction to be gained from achieving these objectives and teaching yourself to set and hit goals can end up transferring into other areas of your life. For example, it can prove to be an integral part of your working life as well. Setting and achieving goals can also have certain mental health benefits as well.
Classic Escapism
From time to time, we all need the opportunity to escape from the stresses of everyday life. When you are learning something new, you are immersing your mind in something else entirely, which gives you a sense of focus. Escapism can also be found through passive activities like watching TV, but this is often accompanied by a sense of guilt that you have not really achieved anything in your hours in front of a screen. Conversely, when you are learning a new skill, you also know that you are being productive with your time, which can prove to be enormously satisfying in our world which is very much focused on achievement.
Sleep Better at Night
An advantage of learning something that you may not have thought of before is the fact that you can tire yourself out mentally, which makes it easier for you to drift off to sleep at night! While a physical workout can be beneficial in tiring out your body, you still may find that your mind is not able to switch off in the way that you would like. However, after a long learning session, you are likely to find that your mind is ready to recharge through sleep.
Change Yourself
Ultimately, the act of learning can have a totally transformative effect on your life. It can give you a new perspective, as well as putting you in contact with people that you wouldn’t have met otherwise. It can open up new opportunities that you wouldn’t have encountered before. So, if you want to change yourself, one of the best ways of doing so is by learning.
As you can see from the diverse list of reasons above, there is plenty that you can gain from lifelong learning in all sorts of different areas of your life. So, if you have not learned anything in a while, remember that it is never too later to pick up that pen and paper once again. Choose something that you are passionate about and you are even more likely to keep it going for the months and years ahead of you. Dive in and enjoy!
