Parenting- 5 Essential tips for Baby Hair Care

August 23, 2021 by Juliann

Having a child is quite a blessing. Nothing can ever replicate the feeling you have when you hold your baby in your arms for the first time. Since that moment, they are your top priority. You need to look after them in all aspects of life in the future. This also includes looking after their hair. Your baby can be born with no hair at all or a head full of hair.

Hair keeps growing for life, which is why proper hair care for your baby is a must if you want them to have healthy and strong hair in the future. There are a lot of things you need to look at while you take care of a baby, and baby hair care is no different. We have curated a list of essential tips to help you take care of your baby’s hair.

Oil massage

An oil massage can be of great help in improving blood circulation for the entire body, including your baby’s scalp. These massages also help in putting your baby to sleep, which is a win-win. When you use oil to moisturize the scalp, it helps keep dandruff away. All you have to do is take some olive or coconut oil in the palm of your hand and rub it slowly in a circular motion on your baby’s scalp without pressure.

Shampoo

The main culprit behind thin and brittle hair for most babies is a dirty and sweaty scalp. You should get a good and gentle baby shampoo and wash their hair at least thrice a week. This will ensure that their scalp stays clean. You are not required to wash their hair every day but do wash them when they get dirty.

Combing

There are porous openings of the scalp that need to be stimulated. Combining helps stimulate it along with aiding in healthy sebum production. Remember, your baby’s scalp is almost five times more sensitive than yours, which is why you need to be gentle while combing their hair. You can use a soft-bristled, large-tooth comb in order to do this. You do not need to comb their hair multiple times a day. Doing this once in the morning and once in the evening is more than enough.

Moisturize

Moisturizing is an essential part of skincare for anyone. Your baby’s face and body need as much moisturization as their scalp. If your baby is bald, moisturizer is all the more important if you want to keep dryness away. If you do not, it will cause problems such as dandruff and dryness.

Care extra for long hair

You need to be vigilant about a lot of things if you decide to let your baby’s hair grow. You should remember to trim their hair, oil them and keep them clean. Leaving oil on your baby’s scalp for a long time will attract dust and dirt, so be mindful of washing it within a few hours. Tight clips and hairbands should be avoided because they pull the hair and can cause discomfort and pain for your baby.

It is quite important to take care of your baby’s hair. It is actually easier to take care of than taking care of adult hair. Use these steps to help you be vigilant and on top of your baby’s hair care.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
