Preparing for Breast Augmentation: 9 Questions to Ask Your Surgeon Before Undergoing the Procedure

May 20, 2020 by Juliann Leave a Comment

Some celebrities are known for their shapely breasts. Dolly Parton and Kim Kardashian are a couple of examples. This makes other women want enhanced breasts. However, breast augmentation is a serious procedure. Anyone thinking of having the procedure needs to get information from the surgeon.

What You Get from Breast Augmentation

The surgeon uses breast implants or fat transfer to enlarge breasts. Further, the procedure can plump the breasts up after childbirth. Augmentation is also the way to go if a woman wants more symmetrical breasts. The best breast augmentation surgeons are honest about whether the procedure can benefit you.

What Breast Augmentation Does Not Do

The procedure will not fix droopy or sagging breasts. Rather, the surgeon may advise a woman to have a breast lift. Some patients opt for breast augmentation and a breast lift. The procedures can be done at the same time. The lift is done first and then implants are inserted.

Are You a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

The best candidates are in good health. Further, women should wait until they’ve finished having children. The breasts must be fully developed, and the candidate should have realistic expectations. For instance, there’s no guarantee that larger breasts will make you feel more self-confident. The procedure is not a magic bullet.

Generally speaking, the most appropriate candidates won’t have had any prior augmentation also. This isn’t a flat rule however, as some skilled surgeons specialise in Breast Revision in Denver (as well as elsewhere) which is focused on rectifying the results of an augmentation to improve upon it the second time. This can give you further peace of mind that there are options if you aren’t happy with any results you get.

Is the Surgeon Qualified?

Find out if the surgeon routinely performs the procedure. Consult with the surgeon and ask to see examples of their work. Make sure the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and ask how many procedures they’ve done.

Where does the Surgery Occur?

The procedure could be done in a hospital or a private surgery center. Make sure the surgery center is accredited. Accredited surgery centers have important equipment to ensure the patient’s safety.

Breast Implant Choices

The surgeon explains the different types of implants. There’s a choice between saline, silicone gel, and highly cohesive silicone “gummy bear” implants. Saline and silicone gel implants are round. On the other hand, “gummy bear” implants add a sloping look to the breast.

Implant Size

The surgeon uses knowledge and experience to select the best implant. Implant size is based on the patient’s size, and the end result they’re looking for. Some patients may require different sized implants for each breast to achieve symmetry. The patient’s current breast size is also a factor.

Procedure Cost

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure, so it may not be covered by insurance. However, most cosmetic surgeons offer payment plans. The procedure runs between $3,000 to $12,000.

What About the Incision?

There are multiple incision types. For example, the incision may be made in the breast crease or on the areola. The surgeon makes sure the incision scar won’t be easily seen. The trans-axillary incision doesn’t leave a scar on the breast. Rather, the incision is made in the armpit.

What to Expect from Surgery

The out-patient procedure is performed with the patient under general anesthesia. The staff monitors the patient for a few hours after surgery and they’re released. Patients should expect pain and stiffness for a few days.

Possible Side Effects

There are possible complications with any procedure. Complications may include breast pain, numbness, and scarring. There’s always the possibility the patient won’t like the way they look.

Women with breast insecurity may want to change their appearance. They should explore the procedure if it could help them live their best life. Make an appointment with a surgeon for a consultation
