Preparing Your Family to Move Across the Country

December 18, 2021 by Juliann

Moving your family to a new house in the same town is one thing but relocating to another part of the country is another. Not only are the logistics of the move slightly more complicated, but you’ll like to experience pushback from your kids who don’t want to leave their friends. You may even be slightly nervous about settling into your new surroundings and making connections as an adult. Although your move might be wanted and necessary, it is important to prepare your family to travel and settle elsewhere across the country, and here are some tips for how you can do that.

Visit Your New Home

Where possible, take your family on a trip before they move to the new town or city, you’ll be living in. This will give you all a chance to start familiarizing yourself with the area and show your kids that it’s not as bad as they think it will be. Try to find some fun activities to do while you’re there, like visiting museums or galleries, theme parks if there is one nearby, or other excursions that your family will enjoy helping everyone start associating this area with positive emotions before you have even moved there.

Book Cross Country Removal Company in Advance

When moving house, you should always book a removal company in advance to help you get your belongings from A to B. However, when moving across the country, you will need to make sure you give yourself plenty of time as this can take more planning. If you have pets, but they can’t come with you in your vehicle or mode of transport, you will also need to think about how you can get them to your new house as well. If you need cat transport, this company offers help finding cat transport, as well as other animals, is worth looking into for good rates.

Packing Up the House

Packing is one of the more daunting aspects of moving house, and it can take weeks before you get everything into boxes and ready to go. Don’t be shy about asking friends or relatives for some help if you need it, and make sure the kids are doing their bit as well. You can even turn it into a game to help keep them motivated.

Let Your Kids Spend Time with Their Friends

While you should get your kids to help with packing, you should also allow them to spend as much time with their friends as possible. They will be upset at having to relocate away from their friends, and although they will make new ones in their new hometown, it’s important to encourage them to nurture these original friendships as well.

Reach Out to Social Groups Before You Move

Finally, think about how you and your partner, if you have one, will fit into your new hometown as well. Look at joining groups on social media that are aimed at locals from that area and see if you can start making some connections. Even speaking to one or two people before you move can help you to adjust easier and make you feel more confident starting again in a new place.

If you are moving across the country with your family, use these tips to help everyone prepare for it and to help make it as positive an experience as possible.

Welcome to Beautiful Moms

Hi! I’m Juliann, a wife to my wonderful husband, Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I first started Beautiful Moms Blog in 2008, my goal was to connect with and support other moms who were in the thick of raising young children. It became a creative outlet where I could share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with companies that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It’s so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. I have always believed that every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she’s in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms Blog has grown and evolved right along with me. Today, my children are adults, and I have embraced the blessings of being a grandma. My passion for encouraging women hasn’t changed—it has simply expanded to include every season of motherhood, from pregnancy and the newborn years to raising teenagers, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

I’m excited to have my daughter, Myelie, as a contributor to Beautiful Moms. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood. She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a home wherever life takes you.

Together, we’re here to support women through every age and stage of motherhood—from pregnancy to menopause—with helpful advice, honest product recommendations, beauty and wellness tips, and plenty of encouragement along the way.

We are PR Friendly and love working with great companies!
