SWITCHCRAFTED: THE STORY OF THE SWITCH WITCHES OF HALLOWEEN DEBUTS FOR
HALLOWEEN 2014
Hardcover Storybook & Switch Witch Introduces a New Tradition for the Halloween Season!
Halloween traditions such as searching for the best costumes, scoring the biggest pumpkin or being spooked at the most frightful haunted house have existed since the late 19th century. It’s only in recent decades that children have taken trick-or-treating to the extreme — collecting and eating obscene amounts of candy.
What’s a parent to do? Author Audrey Kinsman brings a new Halloween tradition into the mix this season with Switchcrafted: The Story of the Switch Witches of Halloween.
This hardcover book and Switch Witch will encourage your little ones to switch out their pounds of Halloween candy for the season’s must-have toy. Did you know that Americans purchase nearly 600 million pounds of candy a year just for Halloween? Can a more health conscious Halloween become a possibility for American families nationwide? As a mom and the creator of Switchcrafted, Kinsman believes in the holiday’s magic. The proud mother of two young boys struggled to find a solution for the eight pounds of candy they collected while trick-or-treating in 2013. An inspiration on a cross-country flight led to the creation of the Switchcrafted.
Says Kinsman, “Switchcrafted updates a classic holiday tradition and incorporates it into real-life parenting scenarios. Getting my kids involved in the magic of Halloween verses the quest for the biggest bag of candy was my motivation. My own family suffers from allergies like celiac disease and lactose intolerance therefore the majority of candy was off-limits. I needed to find a fun alternative to keep the tradition alive.”
Along with the hardcover book and whimsical Switch Witch toy, Switchcrafted comes with a keepsake box and signature trick-or-treat bag. Parents can also enhance their holiday fun by visiting Switchcrafted.com — a robust website and game app full of healthy Halloween recipes, DIY crafting ideas, candy swap solutions, and school-age appropriate games and activities for parents and teachers.
Switchcrafted: The Story of the Switch Witches of Halloween
On a cold and windy Halloween evening, children everywhere asked “Why are witches part of Halloween?” The story needed to be told, and the children deserved an answer. Witches are part of Halloween because they desperately need your candy!
In the mysterious world of cauldron bubbles, flying broomsticks and black cats, witches cast their spells turning nobles into beasts, straw into gold and magic lamps into wish-giving genies. Staying up late and flying a broomstick to conduct all of these tasks requires lots and lots of energy. And for witches, energy only comes from candy–any kind of candy to be precise! But the one spell that no witch can ever cast is the candy spell! During the month of October, the Switch Witch is invited into your home. Show her your best behavior and she gets the go-ahead from the Switch Witches to perform the magic of Switchcraft on Halloween night. She takes your candy in exchange for a new toy! That’s the deal… “Remember that only good kids can trade, So be on your best behavior and a Switchcraft will be made.”
My thoughts: I received a hardcover book, Switch Witch doll, keepsake box, and trick-or-treat bag to review for my eight year-old son, Braxton.
This is such a treat for Braxton who has hoards of candy in his bedroom. Funny thing for us is that he never eats it anyways, so there is no loss there and Braxton has no problem parting with it. Still, The Switch Witch doll makes it so much fun for him to ‘trade in’ his candy for a new treasure each and every night before he goes to bed, and I just put away his forgotten candy to possibly give to trick-or-treaters, or to just toss away, I haven’t decided.
My only problem with this whole ‘Switch Witch’ concept is that I have had to purchase a tidy supply of toys for my hard-core believing little boy. That’s okay though. I dropped a pretty penny at the Dollar Store. Anything to keep the magic of childhood alive for my little boy. It is worth it to see his reaction every morning when he finds what his witch brought him. He won’t be little much longer and the fun will be over for me, so it is all worth it.
