Talking to your Teen about School: A Parent’s Guide

March 19, 2022 by Juliann Leave a Comment

Having a serious discussion with a teenager can be challenging at the best of times, but trying to talk to them about school and their education can be particularly tough.

That’s because teenagers’ brains are wired to learn, so this is the perfect age for them to take on new information.

Unfortunately, due to distractions and hormones, teens often struggle to behave acceptably at school and find the motivation to learn.

They might also find it difficult to decide what to study, which can often feel like a monumental decision for such a young person.

Here are some tips from one parent to another on how to talk to your teenager about school and their educational future.

Get To The Bottom Of The Problem

To begin with, you need to work out what issues they’re having at school so that you can talk to them in the right way and offer them constructive advice. So, before you talk to your child, talk to their teachers and school advisors to find out what’s going on and what issues your teen is having at school. You can then come up with a plan of action before you sit down to talk things over with your teen.

Understand How To Motivate Them

Motivation is vital for anyone who wants to learn, as it’s the fuel that makes our brains want to take on new information and gives us the strength to get started. Many teenagers struggle with finding the motivation to learn, so it’s important that you learn a selection of techniques for motivating a teen. Test out a few different tactics to see which ones work best for your child. You can then help them to find the energy to go to school with a positive attitude and improve their chances of learning and making the most of their education.

Don’t Base All Your Advice On Your Experiences

Our personal experiences shape our views, but it’s important to see the bigger picture, particularly when talking to a teenager. As such, you need to make sure that you think about how your child feels, not just about how you feel. Think hard about any advice before you give it, and remember that the world your teenager is growing up in is very different from the one you experienced when you were a teen.

Actively Listen To Them

Conversations work both ways, so you need to make sure that you listen as much, if not more, than you talk. Listening is an important part of talking to your teen, but you also need to understand what they’re saying and take on board what they’re saying. Being an active listener for your teenager can help you to make the most of your conversation with them and allow you to understand what they want from their education and their later life. It will also help to improve your relationship with your teen, so try to implement active listening techniques when talking to them about their education.

Education is a vital part of any teenager’s life, but it’s also one that’s fraught with challenges. Use these tips to support your kid and help guide them through their school life.
