UPDATING YOUR HOME TO FIT YOUR FAMILY’S NEEDS

November 8, 2022 by Juliann Leave a Comment

While home improvements and renovations can often become time-consuming, the right upgrades can improve the space for your family as well as the overall quality of your home. Whether you have one kid or five, making your home a safe and functional space is crucial to everyone’s well-being. You may feel like you’re constantly updating parts of your home to fit your family’s needs, but in the end, the outcome is always worth it.

If you are considering updating your home, take these steps into consideration to improve the functionality and style of your home.

1. Invest in Functional Furniture

Whether you have a small or larger family, having furniture that is functional, and durable is important to everyone! If you have younger kids, your furniture may be treated like a playground, a bed, and a place where your kids may want to eat the messiest food they can digest. Since your furniture is the main stomping ground for your family, investing in pieces that aren’t too expensive or trendy will be the best route to take for long-term use and design.

Whatever you choose to invest in, whether it be a large sectional or a couple of love seats, you’ll want it to be comfortable, waterproof, and easily washable. Something like a sectional with removable covers that can be thrown in the washing machine weekly might be the best purchase for you to make to avoid stains and messes.

You can easily refresh your home by rearranging your furniture to update your space. Do you have little ones that like to cause some ruckus and get into places they shouldn’t? One way to avoid that is choosing wisely when deciding where to place each piece of furniture within your main living spaces.

If you tend to spend a lot of time in your living room, but there are some areas where your children shouldn’t go near or be on top of, properly arranging your furniture in places they can avoid climbing on top of will be best for you and your family. You likely don’t want your kids playing on top of your side tables or windowsills, so taking these precautionary steps will help to avoid that mischief from occurring.

2. Make the Most of your Storage Space

Regardless of the size of your family, storage space can sometimes be extremely limited. If you’re looking to maximize your closet space, look into installing a custom closet like those from Closets Etc. (https://www.closetsetc.com/). They can fill awkward available space and maximize storage space simultaneously. To create additional storage space, consider these tips and tricks:

  • Install built-in shelves: To make the most of your closet space, built-in shelving can allow you to properly organize your belongings. Built-ins can also give you the space to store bins, small or big, and label them with all the items that are inside.
  • Purchase clear bins: Utilizing clear bins of any size is a great way to keep your space clean and organized. Having these bins in your closets will keep your belongings in their designated space and also allow your family to easily access anything they may be looking for.
  • Establish the use of closet space: Whether you have closets in each bedroom or closets in your hallways, designate each closet to serve a certain purpose. Your kid’s closets should be dedicated to their clothes, shoes, and personal items. Hallway closets may be used to store decorations, and seasonal items, or can be an overflow space for miscellaneous items.

If your family is ever in need of extra storage space down the road, think about other areas in your home that could serve as temporary or permanent storage areas. You may be able to make use of your garage or basement. If you’ve already run out of room for storage in your main living space, it may be worthwhile to invest in storage installations for your garage. Your garage is a great place to keep things stored. It is (more often than not) attached to your home, allowing you to go in and out when you need to, and it can be quite spacious. If you do not keep your car in there, then you will have even more room. Just remember to take a look at companies such as The Smarter Garage, as they will be able to provide you with different ways to transform this area. Take advantage of all rooms in your home to make the most of each space so nothing goes to waste! You never know how much room you have until you properly utilize it.

3. Renovate Your Main Living Space

No matter the size of your family, designing a home that is functional is key. Your living room and kitchen may serve as areas where your family spends most of their time together. These are also areas in your home which you can update as your kids grow older to maintain functional living as time goes on.

When you’re considering renovations on top of already managing your family expenses, it’s important to prioritize your project plans and establish what timeframe best suits your family’s budget. If you are looking to update your living room or kitchen, but are concerned about access to funds upfront, you can take advantage of your home’s equity and apply for a loan. This will allow you to access project funding in one lump sum that you can pay it off in tandem with your mortgage. The updates you have been wanting to make to your home can all become a reality and allow you to work towards your dream home.

While designing your home and working on interior renovations, take into consideration your family’s needs and wants. Once you have an established budget to improve your home, ask your family what improvements are important to them. Do they want to remodel the living room to accommodate more people and their friends? Or do they want to demo the basement and turn it into a game room? The options are endless! But the deciding factor will be based on functionality, cost, and length of time to renovate. The more you improve and update your house, the more suitable it will be for you and your family!
