Safety Considerations
One of the primary concerns when using rideshare services with kids is ensuring their safety. Following age and legal requirements for rideshare passengers is crucial, as these regulations vary from one location to another. Car seat regulations must also be taken into account, with many cities requiring the use of appropriate child safety seats. Verifying the driver’s identity and checking vehicle details, such as the license plate number, before entering the vehicle, are essential steps in enhancing rideshare safety. Rideshare platforms typically offer in-app safety features, including driver information and trip tracking, providing an additional layer of security for passengers.
California Car Seat Regulations & Laws
To ensure the safety of your child in the event of a car crash, California has set in place laws to help protect your child.
- Children under 2 years old need to sit in a rear-facing car seat.
- Children under 8 years old or under 4’9” tall, need to sit in the back of the vehicle in a car seat or booster seat.
- Those 16 or older have to follow the seat belt law.
Current Rideshare Service Car Seat Offerings
Uber & Lyft have come up with a “car seat mode,” making it easier for parents to travel with their children. This allows for additional safety and worry free for parents and children when traveling, in the event of a crash in the rideshare. In the event that car seats are not offered in your rideshare vehicle, it is highly recommended that you bring your own car seat. In fact, many drivers will deny you a ride if you do not have a car seat for your child as there are too many legal issues and potential liability.
Lyft
Currently only available in New York City for an additional $10 fee. This mode’s cars have the IMMI Go car seat, which is forward facing and can only hold riders that are between 31″ – 52″ inches in height and between 22 – 48 pounds in weight.
To request a ride with a car seat, you select the “car seat” ride type, set your pickup and drop off location, and then request the ride. These drivers passed a specific test in order to be a part of the program.
Uber
Similar to Lyft, this car seat program is currently only offered in New York and will add an additional $10 fee. Uber car seats are Nuna RAVA seats that can be used either rear or forward facing. They can safely hold children weighing between 5 and 65 pounds.
To request a ride with a car seat, you first set your pickup and drop off location, then choose your vehicle and select car seat.
Tips for a Smooth Ride
Requesting a child-friendly driver, if the option is available, can contribute to a more pleasant experience. Bringing along entertainment and snacks for the kids helps keep them occupied during the journey, and thus not disruptive to the driver. Being punctual and ready for pick-up minimizes wait time and ensures a timely arrival at the destination. Most importantly, maintaining courtesy and respect towards the driver fosters a positive atmosphere during the ride.
Teaching Kids Rideshare Etiquette
Educating children about proper rideshare etiquette is a crucial aspect of using these services. Teaching them to follow the driver’s instructions, the importance of wearing seat belts, and being respectful throughout the journey ensures a safer and more pleasant experience for everyone. Instilling a sense of gratitude and courtesy towards the driver also helps create a positive interaction between your children and the driver.
Conclusion
In conclusion, using rideshare services with kids requires a thoughtful approach that prioritizes safety, effective communication, and consideration for the unique needs of families. While challenges may arise, the convenience and accessibility of rideshare services make them a viable option for family transportation when approached with careful planning and awareness.
