5 Tips for Happy Family Holiday

June 21, 2023 by Juliann Leave a Comment

Looking for a great trip this summer? Here are some tips for a happy and peaceful family holiday.

Choose the Right Travel Destination

When you’re traveling with young children, choosing the right destination makes all the difference. Not every location is ideal for little ones, so it’s worth taking the time to find places that are truly family-friendly and easy to navigate with kids.

If you’re planning an island getaway, look for resorts that cater to families and offer daily activities to keep everyone entertained. For a winter trip, consider beginner-friendly ski resorts—many even offer childcare or kids’ programs, which can make the experience much more enjoyable for both parents and children.

Finding a place that has enough space for everyone is just as important as the location itself. Many families find that staying in a home or condo is better than a standard hotel room. This gives you a kitchen to cook meals and separate bedrooms for the kids. If you are looking at mountain destinations, you can find many Whistler vacation rentals, for instance, that are right near the slopes. Having a home base like this makes it easier to manage gear and take breaks during the day. It also helps everyone stay relaxed since you have more room to move around.

Create a List and a Flexible Vacation Itinerary

Once you’ve chosen your destination, (such as the Isle of Wight) start mapping out your trip—but keep things flexible. If you’re traveling with kids, involve them in the planning process. Let them pick a few activities so they feel included and excited. As you plan, be sure to consider your family’s needs when trying to find the best place to stay on the Isle of Wight.

Instead of overloading your schedule, allow extra time for each activity. Sometimes it’s more enjoyable to spend a full day doing one thing rather than rushing from place to place. If everyone has different interests, try to structure your itinerary so each family member gets a chance to enjoy something they love.

Find Activities Your Family Will Enjoy

Once your itinerary starts coming together, take some time to research activities that suit everyone in your family. You already have a good sense of what your kids enjoy, so focus on experiences that will keep them engaged and excited. The good news is that kids often love the simple things—whether it’s exploring a new place, trying something different, or even just riding unfamiliar transportation.

If someone isn’t thrilled about the destination or certain plans, try to balance things out. Rotate activities so each family member gets time to do something they enjoy. For example, one person might choose the morning’s activity while someone else picks what to do in the afternoon. That way, everyone feels included—and the whole trip becomes more enjoyable for everyone.

Make Sure You Have Time to Enjoy Planned Activities

When traveling with young children, everything tends to take a little longer—and that’s completely normal. Kids can get tired more quickly, so it’s important to build extra time into your schedule for getting to and from activities without feeling rushed.

Plan to head back to your accommodation earlier in the evening so your children have time to eat, wind down, and get a good night’s sleep. When kids are well-rested, they’ll wake up energized and ready to for a new adventure. It also helps to leave some room for downtime in your itinerary. A slower pace gives everyone a chance to relax, recharge, and truly enjoy the trip.

Surrender to the Unknown

No matter how well you plan, things won’t always go exactly as expected—especially when traveling with young children. Plans may change, and you might not check everything off your list, and that’s okay. Not every moment needs to be perfectly planned to be meaningful.

Instead of focusing on what didn’t get done, focus on the precious moments you shared as a family. Let go of the pressure to make everything perfect and embrace your time together. After all, it’s those unplanned moments that often end up being the most memorable.
