Get Your Garden Ready for Spring with These 5 Top Tips

March 19, 2020 by Juliann

Although your garden has probably been a dull shade of brown throughout the winter, with bare twigs and trees littering your yard, the coming of spring can transform your garden area into a beautiful and relaxing space for all the family to enjoy. In order to make this happen, there are a number of steps that you need to take to allow your garden to flourish.

Improve Your Decking

There is nothing quite like sitting out on your decking during the summer months, whether you are entertaining guests or simply soaking up the sun’s rays. To improve your decking, you should use landscape screws to ensure that your timbers and joints stay tighter for longer. This will prevent any of your decking panels from coming loose and causing potential hazards for your family. You should also take the time to remove moss and algae that might have grown throughout the damp days of winter.

Plant Summer Bulbs and Seeds

If you want your garden to be bright and colorful throughout the summer months, now is the right time to think about planting your summer bulbs and seeds. Many of these can be bought inexpensively from your local garden center.

To prepare the soil for planting, you need to till and mulch it and add organic matter and fertilizer to create the right environment. Then, you should dig small holes and place the bulbs deep within them. In terms of seeds, many of these have to be germinated indoors before you can send them outside after the last frosts. However, you can also buy plugs that allow you to give an instant burst of color to your beds without waiting for flowers to grow. Trust Placer arborists to take care of your garden.

Repair Your Greenhouse

If you are planning to grow your own fruit, vegetables and flowers in a greenhouse over the spring months, it is vital that you are able to repair your greenhouse before you use it. You should review and replace any damaged glass panels which can easily become chipped in outdoor conditions, and you should also take the time to clean your greenhouse with a stiff brush and soapy water in order to remove mold, dust, and even dead plants from previous seasons.

Maintain Your Trellises

If you are planning to grow plants outside this year, you will need to ensure that your trellises are maintained. Not only should you look at fixing any broken wood panels, but you could also consider repainting any trellises that have faded over time. This will enable your plants to grow successfully while still ensuring that your garden is aesthetically pleasing.

Mow the Lawn

Within the first days of spring, it is paramount that you get out the lawnmower to prevent your garden from becoming a wild jungle filled with weeds that could damage your plants. Mowing the lawn not only makes your garden look neater and ensures that upkeep is easier, but it will also help your grass to grow evenly and absorb all the nutrients that it needs throughout the rest of the spring and summer.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
