Reasons Why Playing With Lego Can Benefit Early Childhood

May 4, 2021 by Juliann

When children are very young, their brains are like little sponges—absorbing every sound, sight, and experience around them. Every activity, no matter how simple, becomes a learning opportunity. That’s why the environment and early learning programs we choose for them are so important; they shape future abilities and build the foundation for lifelong success.

If you’re looking for a nurturing place where your child can learn through play, it’s worth exploring a high-quality early learning center, such as this early learning Chatswood.

One of the best (and most timeless) tools for play-based learning? LEGO®.

LEGO has been sparking creativity and imagination since 1932. Most of us remember those colorful bricks from our own childhoods, but few realize just how powerful they are for early learning and development.

Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills—the ability to coordinate small muscle movements, particularly in the hands and fingers—are crucial milestones in a child’s growth. LEGO naturally helps develop these skills.

Snapping bricks together, pulling them apart, and stacking pieces all require careful finger control and hand-eye coordination. For younger children, LEGO Duplo bricks are the perfect introduction, allowing them to practice gripping and connecting pieces with larger, easy-to-hold blocks before graduating to classic LEGO sets.

Imagination

Before children need fancy themed sets or instructions, give them a simple container of colorful bricks—and watch their imagination take over. With no pre-set rules, kids create their own worlds, stories, and solutions.

This open-ended play not only fuels creativity but also teaches problem-solving—a skill that will serve them throughout life. Building something from scratch, then adapting when a tower falls or a bridge won’t hold, strengthens both confidence and resilience.

Teamwork

Playing with LEGO isn’t just a solo activity—it’s a chance to build social skills and teamwork.

When kids play at home, they can focus on their own creations. But in an early learning environment, they share pieces, ideas, and space. Working together on group builds encourages communication, sharing, and cooperation. Educators can guide this further by assigning collaborative LEGO projects, helping children learn the joy of building something amazing—together.

Perseverance

Every parent knows that frustration can be a big part of learning. A tower that keeps collapsing or a tricky structure that won’t stay upright can test a child’s patience.

But here’s where LEGO shines: it teaches perseverance. When something breaks or doesn’t turn out as planned, encouraging your child to try again helps them understand that persistence pays off. This simple lesson—don’t give up, rebuild, and keep going—is one of the most valuable skills they’ll carry into adulthood.

Parental Bonding

In our busy lives, it’s easy to let quality time with our kids slip through the cracks. Sitting down to build with LEGO is a fun, pressure-free way to reconnect.

You’re not just stacking bricks—you’re building memories. Laughing, problem-solving, and imagining together strengthens your bond and helps your child feel seen, supported, and loved. Plus, it’s genuinely therapeutic for adults too (who doesn’t love the satisfying click of LEGO pieces coming together?).

Final Thoughts

LEGO isn’t just a toy—it’s a bridge between play and learning, imagination and skill-building, creativity and connection. From boosting motor skills to teaching teamwork and perseverance, these tiny bricks prepare children for big adventures in life—one colorful creation at a time.

So next time you’re wondering what kind of play truly helps your child grow, remember: sometimes, the most powerful learning tools come in small, stackable packages.

Welcome to Beautiful Moms

Hi! I’m Juliann, a wife to my wonderful husband, Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I first started Beautiful Moms Blog in 2008, my goal was to connect with and support other moms who were in the thick of raising young children. It became a creative outlet where I could share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with companies that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It’s so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. I have always believed that every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she’s in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms Blog has grown and evolved right along with me. Today, my children are adults, and I have embraced the blessings of being a grandma. My passion for encouraging women hasn’t changed—it has simply expanded to include every season of motherhood, from pregnancy and the newborn years to raising teenagers, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

I’m excited to have my daughter, Myelie, as a contributor to Beautiful Moms. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood. She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a home wherever life takes you.

Together, we’re here to support women through every age and stage of motherhood—from pregnancy to menopause—with helpful advice, honest product recommendations, beauty and wellness tips, and plenty of encouragement along the way.

We are PR Friendly and love working with great companies!
