First Road Trip with Toddlers

January 12, 2022 by Juliann

Road trips with toddlers can be challenging since taking care of a toddler is challenging in itself. However, it can also be rewarding and one of those trips you’ll always remember and talk about.  To make the most out of the trip, you’ll need to make arrangements and plan ahead.

Doing so will make the trip easier and safer, as long as you’re able to anticipate what your kids may need during travel and what commodities you may find lacking while away from home.

Proper Documents

The first thing to do before the trip is to obtain international drivers license application and get the permit you’ll need to drive your own car abroad. This is easy enough to do if you already have a national driver’s license. You’ll also need to provide both of these documents when you’re stopped by the police abroad.

The permit is valid for a year or until your national license expires. Taking a road trip while driving yourself gives you the most freedom and the ability to make your own schedule. This becomes especially important when you have a toddle with you.

Plan for Stops

Stopping to take breaks and giving your toddler a chance to break the boring routine of travel is an essential part of the road trip. That way you can plan the trip around the breaks and use them to explore the place you’re visiting in more depth. It will also help you drive safer and be rested on the road.

Keep in mind that the stops and schedule you make aren’t written in stone, and you can change it on the spot as you see fit. This is especially the case if you own or rent the car you’re using.

Be Prepared

Packing and preparing the things you may need on the road is essential. That way you can make sure you’ll have healthy snacks and the toys your kids will ask for. It’s much better to have these prepared than to risk a tantrum while you’re on the road.

Packing too much stuff may be a burden of its own and it may make you a bit less flexible, but it’s a much better option than not packing enough. Make a list, check it twice, and don’t worry if you go a bit overboard with it, at least the first time.

Safety First

Safety on the road is essential and never more so than when you’re traveling with a child. Make sure that you follow all the traffic rules and laws and that you’re driving below the limit at all times. You may be a bit slow on the road, but you’ll be safe.

The same goes for making sure that the toddlers are safe. Having the proper car seats, and seat belts are imperative. If you’re going abroad, take the time to learn about local laws when it comes to car seats and to stick to them while in a foreign country. It’s safer that way and you won’t have to worry about fines.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
