How to Get Rid of Your Dog’s Dandruff

Pets are lovely creatures that pet owners spend most of the time with and are lovely to have around as companions and friends. They are cute to have around and great to care for as described on petsarethebest.net. However when your pet gets dandruff it becomes very uncomfortable. Dandruff is dead skin that flakes off from the body that causes the skin to itch a lot and develop whitish looking scales caused by dry skin. This is prone during the winter season due to lack of humidity when the dog is kept indoors in a heated environment. This causes reduced production of natural oils in the dog’s skin hence making the skin dry.

What Causes Dog Dandruff?

Dog’s dandruff gives a clear indication that something is not right with your dog. This may be caused by allergies, illness, poor diet, food sensitivities, and parasites. A pet owner should always seek the help of a veterinarian to help determine the cause and have the right treatment for it especially dandruff recurring. Most dandruff occurs on the dog’s back and at the base of its tail. Some white flakes may also indicate the presence of mites called Cheyletiella, which are also contagious to humans. Taking your pet to the veterinary can help have the right diagnosis and help prevent the spread of mites. However, a pet owner can adopt these home remedies to help your dog get rid of dandruff. Remember if dandruff persists consult the nearest veterinary officer.

Bathing and Grooming

Ensure you maintain good grooming your dog to keep the dog’s coat free from dandruff and healthy. Use mud baths that have exfoliates to bath your dog regularly but not frequently, to remove dead skin and help moisturize the skin as it contains natural hydrants. Also use a soothing shampoo to bath the dog to help lock in moisture giving a healthier coat, for instance by using an oatmeal shampoo. Brush the dog regularly to stimulate the skin in order to produce natural oils that spread into the dog’s coat. Seek the help of a groomer and a veterinarian to establish special treatments that can help get rid of dandruff as well as to outsource grooming services.

Diet

Poor nutrition may also cause dog’s dandruff. Ensure the dog is fed on food that has enough quantities of carbohydrates, fats, minerals, vitamins and proteins. Seek veterinarian guidance on what nutrients should be incorporated in the dog’s home diet. In cases of allergies, identify the food that the dog has a reaction to and edit it from its diet.

Oils

Use oils to keep the coat moisturised relieving the dog of dry skin discomfort, itch and dandruff. Oils can be administered to a dog both internally by adding to the dog’s food or externally by applying on the dog’s coat. Some of the oils to be administered to your dog include olive  oil, coconut oil, sunflower, Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids that help to replenish the dog’s coat.

About This Blog

Juliann, founder of Beautiful Moms

Welcome to Beautiful Moms!

Hi! I'm Juliann, wife of 33 years to Jon, a mom to four amazing children, and a proud grandma to five precious little ones. I live in Oregon.

When I started Beautiful Moms in 2008, my goal was to connect with other moms who were also raising young children. It became a creative outlet for me to share my thoughts on motherhood, review products I loved, and work with brands that help make family life a little easier.

More importantly, I wanted moms to feel seen. It's so easy to lose ourselves in the demands of caring for everyone else and forget that our own well-being matters, too. Every mom deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and appreciated, no matter what stage of motherhood she's in.

Over the years, Beautiful Moms has evolved right along with me. My children are now all grown up, and I'm blessed to be a grandma.

Life changes so quickly

One thing that hasn't changed is my passion for encouraging other moms—it's simply expanded to include every season of motherhood—from pregnancy and baby's first years to raising teens, becoming an empty nester, navigating healthy aging, and everything in between.

Myelie, contributor at Beautiful Moms

I'm excited to have my daughter, Myelie, join the Beautiful Moms team as a new contributor. As the mom of a newborn and a busy toddler, she brings a fresh perspective on modern motherhood.

She lives in Alabama with her military husband, so she also understands the unique challenges of military life, frequent moves, and building a happy home wherever life takes you.
